Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Earl Watson and James Posey kept the Memphis Grizzlies moving forward in their playoff push. Watson drained a pair of crucial jumpers down the stretch and Posey played a strong all-around game off the bench to spark the Grizzlies to an 88-82 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. With games against Minnesota and Phoenix looming, and Stromile Swift and Jason Williams sitting out with nagging injuries, this would have been a bad loss for Memphis. Thanks to Watson and Posey, the Grizzlies won for the seventh time in their last 10 games. "Since I've been here, this was James Posey's best game," Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. "It's the best I've seen him play. Without James, we are not there at the end tonight. Earl hit some big shots at the end. Mike (Miller) came back and made three or four plays at the end. Either he (Miller) scored or somebody else scored because of him." Down 10 points at halftime, New Orleans closed to 67-65 entering the fourth quarter and took an 80-79 lead on a jumper by Bostjan Nachbar with 2:40 remaining. "I stayed aggressive throughout the game," Nachbar said. "My teammates were good about driving the ball to the lane and kicking out to me. I had some open looks and made some shots. The only thing that bothers me is that we did not pull out the win." Watson answered Nachbar's basket with a 3-pointer to give the Grizzlies the lead for good, 82-80, with 2:23 to play and start a closing 9-2 run. After rookie J.R. Smith missed from the arc at the other end, Watson made another long jumper for an 84-80 advantage with 1:43 to go. "We just tried to get a win, because we know we've got guys hurt," Watson said. "Our goal is to be competitive until we get our full roster back." New Orleans went cold down the stretch and Posey, who forced a key turnover by Hornets guard Dan Dickau late in the game, added a pair of free throws to make it 88-80 with 10 seconds left. "I thought they (the Grizzlies) showed their experience and we showed our inexperience," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "That is a team that could be headed to the playoffs, and we have a bunch of guys that have been together but three or four months. Our inexperience in shot clock understanding and game situation hurt us." Posey had 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Memphis (37-27), which solidified its hold on seventh place in the Western Conference with the victory. Watson scored 16 points and Brian Cardinal added 14. "Our conference is so tough, every game is important at this point," Fratello said. "When you look back a year ago, it took 50 games to get sixth place last year, and 43 wins just to get in the playoffs. It may take even more this year. It may take 45 wins just to get in the playoffs in the Western Conference." Leading 47-37 at halftime, the Grizzlies scored the first five points of the second half. But the Hornets put together a 22-6 run over the next 6 1/2 minutes, taking their first lead at 59-58 on a 3-pointer by Nachbar with 4:19 to play. Nachbar scored 19 points off the bench and P.J. Brown added 14 and 13 rebounds for New Orleans (14-49). Brown set the all-time franchise record with 3,491 boards, moving past Larry Johnson (3,479).
