Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Bob Sura and Tracy McGrady got the Houston Rockets off to a good start against the Portland Trail Blazers. David Wesley kept it going. Sura scored 10 of his 21 points and McGrady nine of his 19 in the first quarter as the surging Rockets jumped out to an early advantage and cruised to their sixth straight win, a 108-77 triumph over the reeling Trail Blazers. The Rockets were coming off a 4-0 road trip, but coach Jeff Van Gundy saw some danger signs at Wednesday morning's shootaround. "We were a little sluggish, and he brought that to our attention," Wesley said. "He said, 'You guys don't look like you want to play.'" But the Rockets flipped the switch by game time and ran away from the Trail Blazers. "It's being professional, that's all," McGrady said. "They were a little shorthanded tonight, a couple of key guys out. Some teams take them lightly." After Sura and McGrady helped Houston to a 34-25 lead after one quarter, Wesley scored nine in the second period to help open a 57-43 cushion at the break. Wesley finished with 21 points. "Bobby started us great and David had a great game," Van Gundy said. "We came out with a professional approach and attitude." Wesley tied his season high with the Rockets. He was 8-for-10 from the field, making 2-of-3 from the arc. "A couple of shots didn't feel that good, but they went in," he said. "I guess that's when you know you're having a good shooting night." Sura, who had six assists, also shot exceptionally well, sinking 7-for-8. It was his fourth game back since missing three weeks with inflammation of scar tissue surrounding the vertebrae. The Rockets are 30-11 with Sura in the starting lineup. "It's still a work in progress," said Sura, who underwent back surgery in the offseason and missed the first month of the campaign. "It's going to take another week. My legs aren't feeling great, but I'm happy about the way we played." Sura and Wesley appear to be developing some chemistry in the backcourt. "Since I've been back, he's been shooting the ball really well," Sura said of Wesley. "He's been on a roll." "He pushes the ball, I run the floor," Wesley said. The Rockets shot 57 percent (20-of-35) in the first half and 51 percent (36-of-71) overall. The Trail Blazers were held to 35 percent (26-of-74). Houston posted its largest margin of victory this season and improved to 3-0 against Portland. The Rockets had won the previous two meetings by a combined five points. The Rockets, who also received 13 points and seven rebounds in just 21 minutes from center Yao Ming, improved to a season-high 14 games over .500 (39-25). "They have to be considered a legitimate threat," Portland guard Damon Stoudamire said. "They have a great inside-out game and they have really bolstered their bench." The Rockets were playing without forward Juwan Howard, who is out for at least four weeks after spraining his right knee in the fourth quarter of Monday's win at Golden State. "He's been playing outstanding since mid-January," Van Gundy said of Howard. "The last two months he's played his role as well as anyone on the team." Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 20 points and Joel Przybilla added 18 for Portland, which lost for the 13th time in 16 games and slipped to 1-6 under interim coach Kevin Pritchard. "We have to play hard, compete every game and set an example for the young guys, and at the same time try to win the game," Abdur-Rahim said.
