Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs did not look past the Charlotte Bobcats. Instead, Tony Parker raced past them. Parker scored 24 points to lead a balanced attack as the Spurs tuned up for a showdown with the Detroit Pistons with a 93-76 victory over the Bobcats that clinched their eighth straight playoff berth. It was a typical "sandwich" game for the Spurs, who handled Minnesota on Wednesday and visit the defending NBA champions in a nationally televised game Sunday. But San Antonio did not overlook expansion Charlotte, which has lost nine in a row. A point guard with blazing speed, Parker made 11-of-17 shots and handed out five assists. He has looked for his offense more in the absence of All-Star guard Manu Ginobili, who missed his fifth straight game with a strained groin. San Antonio held a 60-54 lead in the third quarter when Parker orchestrated a closing 12-0 run. He had a layup and added two hoops after a basket by Tim Duncan, pushing the advantage to 68-54. "Tony's energy was great tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "His aggressiveness set a good tone tonight. He pushed the break well and moved the ball around nicely." "Tony Parker reminds me a little of Allen Iverson with his speed and quickness off the dribble," Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "I don't know if he has the explosiveness of Iverson, but he is a handful and he's improved on his jumper during his time here in San Antonio." After finding Devin Brown for a dunk, Parker rushed a jumper on the final possession of the period. But Nazr Mohammed dunked home the airball for a 72-54 bulge. "In the third quarter, we were more aggressive and played better defense," Parker said. "We went after rebounds and took care of opportunities and got easy buckets in the quarter." A 3-pointer by Brown made it 77-57 early in the fourth quarter, and the Bobcats got no closer than the final margin. Duncan scored 19 points, Brown added 15 and Robert Horry continued his resurgence with 11 off the bench for the Spurs (50-15), who maintained the best record in the NBA as they head to Detroit. The Pistons have won 11 straight home games. "Detroit is going to be a tough game," Parker said. "We will have to be ready for them. They have a lot of energy and are playing well. It is an early game so we must be ready." "They put pressure on your first pass," said Charlotte's Primoz Brezec, who scored 18 points. "There are no easy shots. It's hard to beat them. There are no easy baskets." Earlier this week, Ginobili said he was targeting a return against Detroit, although Popovich wasn't so sure. "It will be a game-time decision. That's all I know," the coach said. The Spurs took the lead for good at 33-30 on Brown's dunk for a three-point play with 8 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter. An 8-0 run late in the period helped open a 52-42 halftime lead. Bobcats rookie Emeka Okafor grabbed 12 rebounds but was held to seven points on 3-of-13 shooting and committed seven of Charlotte's 25 turnovers. "We just played the best team in the league," said Bickerstaff, whose club beat Detroit earlier this season. "There is no doubt in my mind. That is a very good basketball team with their depth and they play together and put so much pressure on you defensively."
