Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After squandering fourth-quarter leads in their previous two games, the New York Knicks were determined not to do it again. Tim Thomas scored five points and Kurt Thomas added four during a pivotal run in the final period as the Knicks posted a 106-92 triumph over the Atlanta Hawks. After wasting leads against Seattle and Miami at home, the Knicks watched a 13-point advantage disappear in this one as the Hawks used a 12-3 spurt to tie the game at 84-84 with 9:41 to go. But New York bounced back with a 16-2 burst to avoid their third straight loss. Mike Sweetney capped the decisive run with a dunk with 57 seconds remaining for a 103-88 cushion. "We just needed this game," Tim Thomas said. "There was a sense of urgency when they tied it up. It's good for us to get a win on the road. We've been struggling. Hopefully, this is the start of something." "We were out there playing like some bums for three quarters," New York's Jerome Williams admitted. "We came back and got our heads locked and right in the fourth quarter." Stephon Marbury scored 24 points, Tim Thomas chipped in 23 and Kurt Thomas 16 and 14 rebounds for the Knicks, who had all five starters score in double figures. New York led, 80-72, in the third quarter before the shorthanded Hawks went on their run. But after Tom Gugliotta drained a 14-foot jumper to tie the game at 84-84, the well went dry for the Hawks, who missed their next 14 shots and were held without a basket for nearly nine minutes. "I think we were getting good looks," Atlanta center Obinna Ekezie said. "We just (couldn't) put it down. It was one of those nights." In addition to missing shots, the Hawks committed three crucial turnovers, including Marbury's theft of an inbounds pass by Gugliotta with 6:27 remaining. Tim Thomas drained a 3-pointer in transition to put New York ahead, 95-86. "I just went for it," Marbury said. "I saw Tyronn Lue wasn't paying attention. He went for the ball and kind of stumbled." "It was a real big play against us when we lost the ball on the inbound," Hawks coach Mike Woodson added. "Tom taking it out and Marbury steals it from Lue and ends up hitting a three. I thought that blew it wide open because we didn't make shots right after that." The game was almost a mirror image of the Hawks' 122-93 loss to Washington on Wednesday. In that one, Atlanta took a brief lead in the fourth quarter before being held without basket for almost seven minutes while Washington went on a 24-2 run to put away the game. "The fourth quarter caught us again," Woodson said. "Coming down the stretch, we missed 14 straight shots. It puts too much pressure on you to defend on the other end and they get stops, and they made shots." Boris Diaw scored a career-high 17 points and collected eight boards and rookie Josh Smith added 16 and eight for Atlanta, which played without starters Al Harrington and rookie Josh Childress due to a back injury and the flu, respectively. "We need everybody to be healthy and on the court," Ekezie said. "With Al and Josh Childress being out, that was definitely a problem. As it is, we struggle to score. We just couldn't buy a shot." The Hawks have dropped 17 of their last 18 games, including six straight at home.
