Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Chris Webber's off-balance 3-pointer got the Philadelphia 76ers back on track. Webber's momentum-turning shot midway through the fourth quarter triggered a closing 14-2 run as the 76ers recovered for a 93-81 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Allen Iverson scored 31 points and rookie Andre Iguodala led a stout defensive effort by the Sixers (32-33), who limited LeBron James to 3-of-20 shooting and moved one game ahead of Orlando for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff berth. Philadelphia blew a 15-point third-quarter lead and trailed, 79-77, after a free throw by Zydrunas Ilgauskas with 6:22 to play. On the next possession, the offense bogged down and Webber ended up with the ball on the right side. The 6-10 Webber used a headfake to get Drew Gooden in the air, leaned to his left and threw in his 14th 3-pointer of the season, giving the Sixers the lead for good. "I tried to get a foul," Webber said. "I thought (Gooden) bumped me. I threw it up and it went in. You just hope it feels good." "A big blow was when Webber made the lucky three," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. Ilgauskas missed two free throws and Webber made a jumper. Iguodala and Rodney Rogers made free throws before Kyle Korver's transition 3-pointer made it 87-79 with 3:44 to play. Jeff McInnis sank two free throws a minute later, but the Cavaliers did not score again. They went the final 6:50 without a basket, missing their last 10 shots and finishing at 32 percent (29-of-91) from the field. Leading the defense was Iguodala. In addition to shutting down James, he had blocks on Robert Traylor and Ilgauskas and a pokeaway from Sasha Pavlovic on consecutive possessions during Philadelphia's run. "Catching Ilgauskas from behind, that was one of the highlights of the season," 76ers coach Jim O'Brien said. "That was a terrific play and a terrific non-call by the official." "I didn't want (Ilgauskas) to get an easy shot," Iguodala said. "I was trying not to foul him, but trying to get my hand on the ball, and he was going a little slow and I just happened to catch up with him." Korver scored 15 points and Webber and Marc Jackson added 14 apiece for the Sixers, who have won 19 of the last 22 meetings between the clubs. The Sixers blocked a season-high 13 shots, five by Rogers and three by Iguodala, who plays fine defense for a rookie. "I thought the job Andre and Aaron (McKie) did on LeBron was really, really strong," O'Brien said. "And we just tried to keep fresh bodies on their top scorers." "(Andre's) always been a stopper for us," Iverson said. "He's young, long and athletic. He makes things happen when he's out there." James had 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Ilgauskas added 15 points and 15 boards but made just 5-of-19 shots for Cleveland (34-29), which has lost two in a row and eight of 11. "I had probably one of the worst shooting games this year and we were still in the game," James said. "It seemed like every little shot that (Philadelphia) put up fell. I remember the one that Chris Webber, with no time on the shot clock, hit a three. It was all bad after that." Iverson, who suffered a chipped bone in his left thumb in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, began the game with a brace taped around it but tore it off after missing four of his first five shots. He finished 9-of-27 from the floor. "I missed four shots in a row and I told our trainer I was going to take this (brace) off if I missed one," Iverson said. "I got hit a couple of times, but it didn't bother me."
