Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- It was not easy, but Grant Hill, new coach Chris Jent and the Orlando Magic finally got a win. Hill scored 23 points to lead five players in double figures as the Magic snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 97-92 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, who lost for the 10th time in 11 contests. Orlando was without leading scorer Steve Francis, who was suspended indefinitely for kicking a courtside photographer during Friday's loss to Seattle. "Considering some injuries, some suspensions, a coaching change on the road, four games in five nights and Chris being thrusted into this position, this is one of our better wins," Hill said. "Adversity builds character. Hopefully this trip will do us good." DeShawn Stevenson started in Francis' place and scored 16 points for the Magic (32-34), who moved into a tie with Philadelphia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "It's just one game, but we got a big one here," Stevenson said. "Whenever you get a win without your franchise player it's big." Neither team led by more than six points through the first three quarters. Orlando opened a 94-83 edge in the final period on Hill's jumper with just over four minutes left. The Magic did not make another basket, and the Trail Blazers cut the deficit to 95-92 with 33 seconds remaining on a layup by Damon Stoudamire. Rookie Jameer Nelson missed on the other end, but Kelvin Cato grabbed the offensive rebound and Hedo Turkoglu hit a pair of free throws with five seconds to go to seal Jent's first win as interim coach. "It was a tough play," Trail Blazers forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. "We tried to rotate and give some help. It's the kind of play that wins and loses games." "This was very special, the team needed a win very badly," Jent said. "These guys have given so much effort in these last few games, and you wonder how long they can keep it up without seeing results." Jent took over for former coach Johnny Davis, who was fired Thursday. "The team gave me the game ball and it was even more special because Grant gave it to me," Jent said. "We all like him," Hill said. "We all really respect him. He's been thrown into this position and he's gained our respect and trust. We tried to get him a win last night, but we didn't do what it takes. Tonight, we did." Rookie Viktor Khryapa, who had scored 33 points all season, did not miss a shot in the first two quarters and scored 14 of his season-high 21 points in the first half as Portland took a 52-50 lead. "I thought Viktor played really great," said Portland interim coach Kevin Pritchard, who fell to 1-8 since taking over Maurice Cheeks. "You'll see a lot of good things from him on both sides of the court." "If I could change my points into a win, I'd rather do that," Khryapa said. "I'm just so glad the team worked on getting me open and giving me some shots. The loss is disappointing because we are playing younger guys and we are playing tough but can't seem to get the wins." Turkoglu scored seven of his 15 points in the third period, including consecutive jumpers in the final minute that gave the Magic a 73-70 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Rookie Sebastian Telfair added 16 points and Stoudamire had 13 and eight assists for Portland, which attempted 68 shots compared to 98 for Orlando. "When you spot another team 30 extra possessions you are not going to win," Pritchard said. "When you give up that many possessions it's a wonder you're even in the game as we were tonight."
