Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Whatever shooting ills Tracy McGrady had appeared to be contagious. McGrady made just 4-of-22 shots and the Houston Rockets shot just 35 percent in a 94-86 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who got a huge game from Kevin Garnett. The two-time defending scoring champion, McGrady was limited to 15 points. He missed all five of his 3-pointers and was part of an awful showing by the Rockets, who never led as they dropped their second straight game. Houston made just 25-of-71 shots, including 4-of-18 from the arc. The starting backcourt of David Wesley and Bob Sura made just 4-of-15 shots and reserve guard Mike James was 5-of-13. "I don't know what we're doing wrong," McGrady said. "We're moving the ball well, we're getting good shots; they just aren't falling. ... When shots aren't falling, it affects everything - your defense, your rebounding. Everything falls apart." The Rockets shot themselves right out of the game. They missed eight straight shots late in the first quarter, which ended with Minnesota holding a 25-16 lead. They missed their first eight of the third period and fell behind, 71-48. "We're not playing hard enough to win," unhappy Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "When you don't concentrate on what you're doing, you're going to miss shots. We've played two good quarters in the last two games, and those were because (Ryan) Bowen was in the game trying to overcome the lack of energy from everyone else." After closing to 86-77 midway through the final period, Houston went without a basket for nearly five minutes. "This was a blowout," Van Gundy said. "I don't care what the final score was. They would have beat us by 30 if they wouldn't have gotten cute with that small lineup in the fourth quarter." Garnett had 30 points, 17 rebounds and six assists, taking charge down the stretch after the Rockets pulled within single digits. His 59 double-doubles lead the NBA. "We played three good quarters, then we just kinda held on in the fourth," Minnesota coach Kevin McHale said. "But for the most part, in the nuts of the game, we did a really nice job defensively. We contested them, we got out on the perimeter, and got after them. This was a good win." The Timberwolves also got a big lift from reserves Wally Szczerbiak and Sam Cassell, who combined for 30 points in the first half to help build a 57-44 lead. "Wally hit some huge shots for us tonight," Garnett said. "We got a little passive in the fourth quarter, and they got back into it. But Wally stepped up and they ran out of time. Our lead was too much to overcome." "We try to stop everybody, especially Garnett," Van Gundy said. "Tonight we stopped nobody." Szczerbiak scored 20 points and Cassell added 18 for the Wolves (34-34), who are trying to stay in the Western Conference playoff race. They trail Denver by four games in the loss column with just 14 to play. "We can still get in the playoffs," Cassell said. "We gotta go on an eight-game win streak or something like that. It's possible."
