Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Even without Tracy McGrady, the Houston Rockets refused to become the first Southwest Division victim of the New Orleans Hornets. Bob Sura had 19 points and 11 assists and David Wesley scored 15 points as the Rockets overcame the early loss of McGrady and posted an 81-68 victory over the Hornets. With just 3:19 gone in the opening quarter, McGrady suffered a strained right hip while on defense and was helped off the floor by teammates. The All-Star guard missed his only shot but handed out one assist before the injury. "Obviously, it is a big blow," said Wesley, who was acquired from New Orleans in December. "But we have a good inside game and we've got good shooters on the floor. Our defense is going to give us a chance to make some mistakes, and hopefully all those other things will work out." X-rays were negative and McGrady is listed as questionable for Houston's game at San Antonio on Sunday. Seven of the Rockets' next nine games are on the road, and coach Jeff Van Gundy knows a healthy McGrady would make life much easier for his team. "It's about production," he said. "We can get a bunch of stiffs to lead. We need guys who can play." The Rockets managed to escape the first quarter with a 22-17 lead, but the Hornets held Houston to just 16 points in the second and ended the half tied at 38-38. Leading, 54-51, with 3:46 to go in the third period, the Rockets used a 19-7 burst capped by a layup by Jon Barry with 7:13 remaining in the fourth to take a commanding 73-58 lead. The Hornets never got closer than nine points thereafter. "We showed great heart in the second half," Van Gundy said. "For the most part, we've done a good job of that this year. New Orleans is such a big, strong, physical team. I'm pleased with how hard we competed against them." Yao Ming scored just 12 points for Houston, but Scott Padgett recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 boards and Clarence Weatherspoon had seven and 11, his first double-digit rebounding effort of the campaign. Lee Nailon scored 17 points, J.R. Smith added 11 and P.J. Brown eight and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who must beat either Memphis on Saturday or Houston on April 1 in order to avoid becoming the first team in NBA history to go an entire season with defeating a divisional opponent. "We missed a grand opportunity to get it done," Brown said. "Tracy was out, Yao didn't play particularly well. It was a frustrating night. "We're in the toughest division in the NBA. Having such a young, inexperienced team with all the turnover we've had ... I don't think anyone in the division has been through what we've been through this year." The league's lowest-scoring team, New Orleans is averaging 82.6 points in 14 divisional games and has shot 39 percent in their last four contests against Southwest Division foes. In this one, the Hornets shot just 35 percent (14-of-40), including 0-of-10 from the arc.
