Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The road in general and the American Airlines Center in particular were nowhere for the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers to be. The Cavaliers suffered their 11th straight road loss, a 117-86 rout at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks, who got 26 points from hot-shooting Michael Finley and 23 from Keith Van Horn. Winless away from home since a 105-87 triumph at Golden State on January 22, Cleveland had dropped its previous four visits to Dallas and seven straight overall to the Mavericks. "Right now we're not in the class of a Dallas, San Antonio or Detroit," said Cavaliers All-Star guard LeBron James, who scored 19 points. "We have to fight to try to make the playoffs. We have to execute. We have to play basketball. It's all about a positive attitude." Challenging for the Central Division lead just over a month ago, Cleveland (35-32) remained one game ahead of Indiana in the race for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. It fell two games behind fifth-place Chicago. "This team is going through a tough time right now," Cavaliers Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas said. "It's not going to get any easier, either. I just think we're not playing well right now - that's the bottom line. If we play like this at home, we're not going to be able to win, either. Obviously it's a lot tougher on the road when you're not playing well." The game was tied, 29-29, after one quarter. Finley, who scored 11 points in the opening period, gave the Mavericks the lead for good, 34-31, with a 3-pointer with 10:59 remaining in the second quarter. "When they got into their running game, they started shooting threes and we got sucked in at times," Cavaliers coach Brendan Malone said. "Finley was also making shots with a hand in his face." Finley made a staggering 8-of-8 3-pointers, one shy of the NBA record for most without a miss held by Latrell Sprewell. "I had good looks at the basket," Finley said. "My teamates were finding me in transition and giving me good opportunities to make the most of those shots. They were shots that I've been missing in the past and fortunately I was hitting them tonight." Van Horn scored 12 points and Jason Terry added 10 in the quarter as Dallas built a 66-50 halftime advantage. "In the second quarter we just wanted to stay aggressive and attack the basket," Terry said. "Keith was doing a great job of catching the ball early in transition and driving and putting pressure on the defense. I just tried to do the same thing, get in the lane and create for others. Things just started to open up and we were getting stops on the other end." "I've just been going out there trying to be aggressive," Van Horn said. "When I see my openings, I try to take advantage of them. I just play within the concept of this team and how we play basketball. It's been working out for us and I'm just going to try to continue doing that." Finley buried a pair of 3-pointers during a 12-2 run in the third period that gave the Mavericks an 82-57 cushion with 3:46 to go. "I was putting up two hands and blowing on his face," James said. "I was trying everything. He was in a groove tonight. When a guy is shooting like that, it doesn't matter what you try to do on him." Van Horn scored seven points in a 14-3 burst early in the fourth quarter that staked Dallas to a 103-71 lead. Rookie Devin Harris, who scored 12 points, hit a 3-pointer with 4:39 left to give the Mavericks their largest lead at 112-77. Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points and 14 rebounds and Josh Howard scored 11 points for Dallas (46-23), which has won seven of its last nine games and trails idle Seattle by 2 1/2 games for the third-best record in the Western Conference. "We're in the playoffs," Finley said. "We're not one of those teams fighting in these last 13 games to make the playoffs. It's good for us to have a solidified playoff spot and hopefully, maybe that can go up." Drew Gooden had 16 and eight boards and rookie Anderson Varejao added 14 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost five of their last six.
