Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Reserves Eduardo Najera and Earl Boykins have the red-hot Denver Nuggets marching toward a playoff berth. Najera had 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and Boykins scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter as the shorthanded Nuggets raced past the Sacramento Kings, 113-99, for their sixth straight win. Carmelo Anthony scored 12 of his 28 points in the third quarter for the Nuggets, who won again despite the absence of forward-center Marcus Camby (ankle) and the early departure of forward Kenyon Martin (bruised chest). Martin gave it a go but managed just three points and four rebounds before sitting down for good with 8:33 left in the third quarter. Najera, acquired from Golden State at the trading deadline, came on to give Denver a spark. The energetic forward scored five baskets in the next two-plus minutes, including a pair three seconds apart, as the Nuggets used an 11-3 run to take the lead for good 69-64 with 6:19 left. "Eddie played with lots of energy tonight," said Nuggets coach George Karl, who improved to 22-5 since taking over the team. "He does the little things for us that you don't see in the stats, though his stats were pretty good for us tonight." "I didn't think that we played with a lot of intensity in the first half and I thought we needed more energy and more intensity in the second half so that's what I concentrated on," Najera said. "I did it through some offense and I normally do it through defense, but energy is energy, and I thought I gave everybody a boost. Denver held an 82-78 lead entering the final period, which Boykins opened with a 3-pointer. The Sixth Man Award candidate added a pair of jumpers to widen the bulge to 96-87 with 7:09 to go. "Right now, we're just playing great basketball," Boykins said. "Every game, we're playing at the pace we want to play and when you play at that pace and get defensive rebounds, you're usually going to have success." The Kings got no closer than seven points thereafter. Najera had a follow shot and dunk before a leak-out layup by Andre Miller sealed it at 109-95 with 2:14 remaining. "All of the things we talked about, we just allowed them to do in the second half," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "I thought they just played a lot harder than we did and with more energy." Miller had 18 points and 10 assists and Nene added 12 points for the Nuggets, who held a 50-22 edge in bench points. Denver (38-30) has won 14 of its last 15 games to climb within one game of Memphis for seventh place in the Western Conference. It holds a three-game lead over Minnesota. Peja Stojakovic led the Kings with 24 points and Kenny Thomas chipped in 17. "They are a good basketball team and they just outplayed us in every aspect of the game in the second half," Stojakovic said.
