Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- If the New Orleans Hornets are to find a silver lining in an otherwise difficult season, they may only need to look to the play of rookie J.R. Smith. Smith continued his strong offensive play with a season-high 33 points to lead the Hornets to a surprisingly easy 96-85 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. It was just the fifth road win for New Orleans, which had lost four straight overall, and its first in 15 games in the rugged Southwest Division. The Hornets grabbed a 41-29 advantage late in the second quarter on one of Smith's season-high six 3-pointers and held a double-digit advantage thereafter. "Just coming into the game we were focused on trying to win," Smith said. "Fortunately I happened to be the scorer to win the game. Fortunately my shots fell tonight, and we ended up beating a pretty good team." The 19-year-old Smith scored 19 points in the first half and nine more in the third quarter, when the Hornets extended their lead to 78-62. He shot 13-of-18 overall and is averaging 22.4 points over his last five games. "He was great tonight," New Orleans coach Byron Scott said. "I thought he did a heck of a job making shots." "I'm just trying to do what I can to help my team," said Smith, who had just one turnover in 36 minutes. "I feel more in control on the court, and I'm looking for my shot more. I'm just trying to do what it takes to win." The Grizzlies scored the game's first six points, but Smith keyed a 16-8 surge to turn things around. He scored 11 points in the run and capped it with a jumper to give the Hornets the lead for good, 16-14. With forwards Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift slow to recover from recent injuries, Memphis showed little ability to score. It scored just 36 points in the first half - one more than a season low - on 32 percent (10-of-31) shooting. The Grizzlies had just nine assists against 16 turnovers and shot 12 percent (2-of-17) from 3-point range, their worst effort from the arc this season. They also were outscored, 20-4, in second-chance points. "What can you say?" said Memphis guard Bonzi Wells, who scored just four points in 15 minutes. "It's just tough. We weren't ready to play. Teams like that are tough to play because they have nothing to play for so they just come out and shoot any shot they want." "I was just disappointed in our performance," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. "I felt like we were just one step behind in every phase. It wasn't a good performance and we know that." New Orleans limited Memphis to just three baskets in the second quarter and took a 49-36 cushion into the break. "I thought the thing that got us started tonight was our defense," Scott said. "We did a much better job of keeping people out of the paint and then we rebounded the ball. That makes the offense easier when you do those things." "Everything around the board, we didn't do," Wells said. "That adds up to a loss every time." P.J. Brown scored 19 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Hornets, who salvaged the finale of the four-game series with the Grizzlies. Brian Cardinal scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and Lorenzen Wright added 12 and 12 rebounds for Memphis, which had won four of its last five games. The Grizzlies (39-29) fell 2 1/2 games behind Houston for sixth place in the Western Conference.
