Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson did not let a bad shooting night get him down, especially with Andre Iguodala there to pick him up. Iverson missed 23 shots but scored 13 fourth-quarter points and Iguodala scored 14 of his 18 in the second half as the Philadelphia 76ers posted a 96-89 victory over the reeling Los Angeles Lakers. It was just one of those nights for Iverson from the field, but the All-Star guard did nearly everything else to lift the 76ers to their fifth win in six games and another step closer to the playoffs. "I could not get it right," Iverson said. "I had no feeling whatsoever. I owe my teammates all the credit for staying with me and not letting me get frustrated. At times, I was frustrated because I felt the reason we weren't playing well was because I was struggling." Iverson was 5-of-28 from the field and scored 20 points but handed out a career-high 15 assists and made several clutch plays down the stretch. "I'm glad I did something right in that game," Iverson said. "I'm happy I had the assists I had. Obviously, my teammates did a great job of finishing plays. I knew in the whole 48-minute game, I had to do something out there right. And as far as the offensive effort I had, I did everything 99 percent wrong." Kobe Bryant scored five straight points to pull the Lakers within 84-83, but Iverson responded with a three-point play with four minutes remaining to extend Philadelphia's lead to four. He hit a jumper from the top of the key with just under three minutes to play for a 90-85 edge and hooked up with Iguodala on a spectacular alley-oop dunk to make it 94-87 with 1:33 to play. "It was a little bit of an adrenaline boost," Iguodala said. "We got that dunk on the defensive end by getting that steal and by hitting the glass. What sets us apart when we're playing good and when we're not is when we're playing good defense and getting out on the offensive break." Philadelphia (35-34) is surging at just the right time as the win pulled it into a tie with Indiana for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race and within 2 1/2 games of Boston for first place in the Atlantic Division. The win was a big one for the 76ers, who had not been over .500 since they were 4-3 on November 14. Philadelphia, which still must visit Sacramento and Phoenix on its three-game road trip, is just one game behind Cleveland for sixth in the East. While the Sixers are flying, the Lakers are floundering as they dropped their eighth straight game. Bryant scored 34 points and Chris Mihm added 17, but Los Angeles could not overcome 27 turnovers - including six by Bryant. "We made too many turnovers," Bryant said. "We couldn't get back on defense and gave them too many easy baskets. We didn't give our defense a chance. We did a good job in our half-court defense, but it was the transition baskets that hurt us." Los Angeles (32-37) is on its worst losing skid since dropping the final 10 games of the 1993-1994 season, which was the last campaign it failed to make the playoffs. Iverson sympathized with the Lakers' misfortunes concerning their fall from championship heights. "Yes, I can imagine the Lakers' position," Iverson said. "When you trade the best player in the league, what would you expect is going to happen? Somehow, you've got to get equal value for somebody like Shaquille O'Neal. That's hard to do and without having a great player here like they have had for years with O'Neal is going to hurt them." Reeling from the team's recent demise, Bryant spoke softly and somewhat subdued in his postgame interview. "It's a process to get better. When we get back to the top, it will make it that much sweeter," Bryant said. "We all play the game for the love of the game. It's not very hard to come out and focus on the game. Focus on the task at hand and play."
