Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis kept the Boston Celtics focused on their weaker opponent and not the upcoming game with an ancient rival. Davis came off the bench to score a season-high 36 points as the Celtics broke a four-game losing streak with a 116-100 victory over the lowly Atlanta Hawks, who have lost 11 in a row. The Celtics (39-33) are four games ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers atop the Atlantic Division. Boston has 10 games remaining and hosts Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. "It was just a great win," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I don't know if we could have shot much better. It's amazing. Ricky (Davis) only missed three shots and we were as efficient as can be." The Celtics wasted little time jumping out to a big lead, going on a 26-7 burst bridging the first two quarters that was capped by a 3-pointer by Paul Pierce for a 53-23 edge with 6:37 before halftime. "It was very important to get this win and get off the slide," Pierce said. "It's that time of the year and we should have beaten this team like we did." Davis made eight of nine shots and scored 20 points in the second period, including 14 of Boston's last 15, to give his team a 68-46 advantage at the break. The Celtics shot 69 percent (29-of-42) from the floor in the half. "That's what I do," Davis said. "I give them a spark off of the bench. We got the win. I was shooting good. I've had good quarters before. I have never sat down and looked at which was the best." "The number I was most proud of was at the half we had 23 assists," Rivers said. "When we spread the ball like that, we are a terrific team. We were just telling our guards to look ahead. We wanted to fast-break like the old Celtics." Rookie Josh Childress scored 13 points in the third quarter as Atlanta cut the deficit to 84-75 with 1:35 remaining. But rookie Al Jefferson scored Boston's first six points in the fourth period and helped the Celtics gradually extend the margin to 109-90 with 4:37 left. Pierce scored 17 points, Gary Payton added 14 and rookie Tony Allen 10 for the Celtics, who shot 60 percent (45-of-75) and beat the Hawks for the third time in four meetings. Childress scored a season-high 26 points, Tony Delk added 18 and rookie Josh Smith 16 with 11 rebounds for the Hawks (11-61), who lost for the 24th time in 25 games. "It wasn't my best game," Childress said. "I got to the free throw line a lot. But I missed some easy shots. I should have done more." The Hawks have allowed at least 100 points in 22 of their past 26 contests and fell to 8-27 at home. "We came out so lackadaisically defensively," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "We gave up too many layups - behind our defense, through our defense. I bet we gave up 50 points on layups. We were awful in the first half."
