Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets are doing their best to determine their own playoff fate. Vince Carter made a crucial 3-pointer down the stretch and Tim Thomas missed a shot from the arc as time expired, allowing the Nets to escape with an important 93-91 victory over the New York Knicks. The Nets (35-38) beat their cross-river rivals for the 14th time in 17 games - not including last year's first-round playoff sweep - and pulled within one-half game of Philadelphia for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. Just a week after two bad home losses to Memphis and Minnesota, the Nets posted their third straight victory. "I thought people thought we were going to pack it in and see what happens," Nets point guard Jason Kidd said. "But we truly believe that we can make the playoffs." New Jersey has nine games left, including a home contest against Philadelphia on April 17. "We have nine games left," Frank said. "It was good to gain ground, but there's a lot of basketball to be played. Every game is our biggest game of the year." "The biggest thing is for us to take care of our business and win as many games as we can," Kidd said. Carter scored 10 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 2:42 remaining, giving the Nets an 89-85 lead. It was his third straight 30-point game and 19th since joining the Nets in a December trade with Toronto. "I knew there was five seconds left (on the shot clock)," Carter said. "If a guy didn't call three seconds, I was going to take my time and get my feet set. I let it go and I was able to get my feet set." After Thomas scored for the Knicks, Jason Collins hit a jumper, Kidd stripped former Net Stephon Marbury and converted a layup on the other end for a 93-87 advantage with 1:20 left. Marbury made two free throws 15 seconds later and Thomas' follow shot with 30 seconds to go pulled the Knicks within 93-91. Following an offensive interference call on rookie Nenad Krstic, the Knicks had one final chance. After a timeout, the Knicks inbounded with 4.8 seconds left. Thomas took a pass from Marbury, but his banker from the top of the key bounced off the rim as time expired, sealing an otherwise sloppy victory for the Nets. "It wasn't always pretty but it was gritty," Frank said after a game that featured 37 turnovers and 55 fouls. "We did just enough to win. It was one of those games you had to grit out." Carter scored 23 points after halftime. He shot just 2-of-9 in the first half as he tweaked his left ankle. But after getting it retaped, he was 7-of-16 in the second half. "My Achilles, I tweaked it a little bit," Carter said. "I just wanted to run in and get it re-taped and come back out. I had trouble lifting early in the first half. They just re-taped it and I was fine." Marbury scored 26 points and Jamal Crawford 23 for the fading Knicks (29-42), who clinched their fourth straight losing season. They had not had four straight losing seasons since 1984-88. The Knicks lost their fifth straighht game and fell a season-high 13 games under .500. They also continued to lose close games, falling to 9-18 in contests decided by six points or less. "I don't know how many games we've been in where we've been in a situation where we lost in a tight game," Tim Thomas said. "It could have been a season change if we'd won a couple of them." Kidd scored 18 points, Clifford Robinson had 12 and Krstic 10.
