Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Carmelo Anthony and DerMarr Johnson rescued the Denver Nuggets from a potential letdown. Anthony scored 23 points and Johnson added six of his 10 in the fourth quarter as the Nuggets posted a 103-97 victory over the reeling Portland Trail Blazers. The Nuggets (41-31) have won 17 of 19 games since the All-Star break to move one-half game ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies for seventh place in the Western Conference. "We're playing with a lot of confidence right now," Johnson said. "Things are coming pretty easy for us and we just want to keep it going. We know we have a tough schedule coming up next week (at Memphis and Minnesota), but we feel that we can play with anybody." One day after an impressive 18-point win over San Antonio, Denver was in danger of suffering a rare defeat when Joel Przybilla gave Portland an 86-83 lead with just over eight minutes remaining. But Anthony and Johnson scored six points apiece as the Nuggets took control with a 14-0 run. Anthony, who made 9-of-17 shots, capped the spurt with a jumper that made it 97-86 with 1:28 left. "I just tried to be patient and let the game come to me," Anthony said. "Earlier on they were keying on me, sending two or three people. Anytime they do that, it's going to be hard to do anything out there, but I hit a couple of shots at the end." In addition to his offensive contribution, Johnson frustrated Portland guard Damon Stoudamire on the other end. Stoudamire scored 27 points, but just two in the first 11 minutes of the fourth quarter. "That's kind of the trademark of our team," Denver coach George Karl said. "When we're not playing well we keep things close and then we figure it out in the fourth. DJ (Johnson) made a great defensive commitment on Damon and got him under control. Then Carmelo was good at giving us an offensive weapon on the other end of the floor." During the burst, the Trail Blazers missed nine shots and committed five turnovers en route to their 15th loss in 17 games under interim coach Kevin Pritchard. "Fatigue began to set in," Pritchard said. "We went six minutes (6:53) without scoring and those minutes that piled up on Shareef (Abdur-Rahim) and Joel made a difference." Abdur-Rahim played all 48 minutes and scored all 20 of his points through the first three quarters. He played 41 minutes Friday in Seattle. "I'm pretty wiped out," Abdur-Rahim said. "We played hard though. We just hit a bad patch and couldn't put the ball in the bucket. But with all the excuses that we could make, we still put ourselves in a position where we can win games. It's just frustrating not to win." Andre Miller scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half, when Denver shot 61 percent (25-of-41) to take a 62-54 lead. Stoudamire scored 11 points in the third period, including a 3-pointer with 4:54 on the clock that gave Portland a 72-71 advantage. The lead changed hands on the next eight possessions before the Trail Blazers took an 80-79 edge into the final quarter.
