Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks slowed down Elton Brand in the fourth quarter. By that time, it was too late. Brand scored 31 of his season-high 33 points in the first three quarters and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers handed the league-worst Hawks a 12th straight defeat, 111-91. Corey Maggette added 25 points and Chris Wilcox 22 for the Clippers (33-41), who had been 0-4 on a seven-game road trip and had not won away from the Staples Center since February 3 at Memphis. "I don't even remember," Brand said of his team's last road win. "We had some good games, we just couldn't finish them." "It's been a long time," Maggette added. "We've been on two long road trips. We're just glad to get a win." Brand made sure the Clippers would not suffer the same fate against the lowly Hawks, making 13-of-15 shots to stake the Clippers to an 88-67 lead entering the final period. Los Angeles connected on 65 percent (35-of-54) from the floor through three periods and finished at 57 percent (43-of-75). "I was hot," Brand said. "Guys were feeding me the ball, so I could do something with it. We've been struggling on the road, so we didn't know what to expect. We knew we had to come in and play well and play hard." "I thought (rookie point guard Shaun) Livingston did a great job of running the show today," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We moved the ball, we had 31 assists and we got some good shots. We did a good job defensively. It was a good effort." Atlanta pulled within 91-82 on a reverse dunk by rookie Josh Smith midway through the fourth quarter. Wilcox responded with a jumper and two free throws to trigger a 10-0 run that put away the game. "You can't count any professional team out," said Maggette, who scored five points during the run. "Luckily, we were up by 20 and had the opportunity to withstand their run and come back and make some shots." The Clippers started red-hot, connecting on 15 of their first 20 shots to take a 30-22 advantage after one quarter. Brand made 6-of-7 shots for 12 points. "Elton had a great game," Maggette said. "He didn't miss a shot." Rookie Josh Childress scored 23 points to pace the Hawks (11-62), who have lost 25 of their last 26 games and have surrendered at least 100 points in their last 13 contests. "We're not playing," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "These last two games have been unacceptable. It's another night we give up 50-some points in the paint. You can't beat teams like that." "We came out from the jump not even playing, and that hurt," Smith said. "You can't do it by yourself, so it has to be a team effort." With the exception of Childress, the Hawks starters were an anemic 7-for-28 from the field. "I thought our starters were just awful tonight," Woodson said. "Al (Harrington) and (Obinna) Ekezie didn't give us a whole lot tonight. I can't expect the rookies to carry this team." "Tonight, I didn't come out with the energy to get guys up early," said Harrington, who finished with three points on 1-of-8 shooting. "I take the blame. Tonight we were the worst we've been in a while." The Clippers' starters outscored their counterparts, 100-40.
