Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Mike Miller scored from outside and the Memphis Grizzlies' big men dominated inside to bolster the team's postseason position. Miller scored 22 points and Lorenzen Wright, Pau Gasol and Brian Cardinal helped the Grizzlies score a season-high 58 paint points in a 102-82 rout of the fading Los Angeles Lakers. Memphis (41-31) is tied with Denver for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race and three games ahead of ninth-place Minnesota (39-35). The Grizzlies host Denver on Tuesday. "Every win right now is key. We can't afford to lose any more," Miller said. "We control our own destiny right now. We just need to focus and play our game." "We are trying to work our way into a playoff spot," Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. "We are a long way off because all of the other teams are winning, so we have to continue to win." In a game they never trailed, the Grizzlies took command by blitzing the Lakers with a 25-7 burst in the final 7 1/2 minutes of the opening period. Wright scored 10 of his 16 points in the period as Memphis took a 32-14 lead - its largest this season after one quarter. "We came out hard and aggressive," Gasol said. "We wanted to push the ball and not give them a chance. We knew they'd played last night and had a tough loss, so we wanted to jump on them early and get a comfortable lead." Things got worse for the Lakers as the Grizzlies boosted their advantage to 58-32 at halftime and superstar Kobe Bryant was lost for the rest of the contest. "When you bring that kind of effort, what happened to us tonight is what happens to you," said Lakers forward Brian Grant, who was ejected in the second quarter after an altercation with Gasol. "They will embarrass you, and that's what happened. We got embarrassed in the first half." Bryant, who scored just nine points, bruised his right leg in the first quarter. He returned for a couple of minutes before leaving the game for good with 3:52 left in the first half. "He was out there limping around and we decided we weren't going to take a risk," said Lakers interim coach Frank Hamblen, who fell to 9-20 since taking over for Rudy Tomjanovich. "I guess we'll know more tomorrow." Caron Butler scored 18 points for Los Angeles (33-40) which has lost 10 of its last 11 games. The Lakers are on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time since 1994. "We can't play our best basketball when our backs are up against the rope like that," Butler said. "The energy just has to be there. Otherwise we can't win." The win marked Memphis's first-ever season sweep of the Lakers.
