Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace helped the Detroit Pistons avoid a close call in a playoff tuneup. Wallace scored 25 points to lead five players in double figures and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Pistons posted a 113-103 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Detroit (46-27) beat Toronto for the third time in four meetings and reduced to two its magic number to clinch second place in the Eastern Conference. "We are coming down the homestretch," Wallace said. "And we have to make sure we have our act together. We are in playoff mode now." The Pistons shot nearly 60 percent (25-of-42) from the floor in the first half and got 16 points from Wallace and 13 from Tayshaun Prince for a 59-51 lead. Rafer Alston scored 10 points in the third quarter, including consecutive baskets midway through the period to bring Toronto within 72-71. But Antonio McDyess made a layup to cap a 15-5 spurt, extending Detroit's lead to 87-77 with one minute left. The Raptors cut the deficit to 89-88 when Morris Peterson sank his fifth 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Chauncey Billups responded with eight points in a 18-2 burst for a 107-90 advantage with 5:54 left. "Chauncey really stepped up and made some big plays," Prince said. "Early on, he really shared the ball well, and opportunities came in the second half where he had open looks and was able to penetrate on the pick-and-roll and get the lead back up." "They were hard to guard and they made shots," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "At the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter, we shut them down and that was the key. I thought we had a lot of guys play really good." Billups scored 26 points, Richard Hamilton added 19 with 11 assists and nine rebounds and Prince had 18 for the Pistons, who shot 58 percent (44-of-76) and had a 41-34 rebounding edge. "Rip (Hamilton) has been playing great," Billups said. "He really has the ball in his hands more than anyone else on our team so he has the opportunities to make plays and score." Peterson and Jalen Rose scored 22 points apiece for the Raptors (30-43), who are six games out of the final playoff spot in the East with nine remaining. "Every loss does hurt, especially when you know you need a win," Peterson said. "It's definitely disappointing. But until they say we are not in the playoffs, we are not going to give up and that has to be our mentality."
