Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Just when the Dallas Mavericks appeared finally healthy, Dirk Nowitzki came up hobbling. Nowitzki missed portions of the third and fourth quarter with a sore right ankle and as the Mavericks won their fifth straight home game, a 114-105 victory over the Orlando Magic. The Mavericks (50-24) reached 50 wins for the fifth straight season, and Nowitzki has been the driving force behind that success. A perennial All-Star, the 7-foot German is having the best season of his career, averaging 26.6 points and 10.0 rebounds. Nowitzki hung around long enough to collect 21 points and nine rebounds. He scored 14 points in the first half, helping Dallas open a 57-44 lead. But early in the third quarter, Nowitzki took a seat with a sore ankle. He returned later in the period but left for good with 3:39 remaining in the game, flexing his right knee and wincing. "The last play of the half when I drove on (Magic rookie Dwight) Howard, I kind of got fouled and landed a little awkward," Nowitzki said. "The bone spurs began to hit each other. For the whole second half, it wasn't really getting loose. I just tried to coast through it and get the win." "The bone spurs in his ankle are something he pretty much has dealt with all year," Dallas guard Jerry Stackhouse said. "He tries to make real little of it, but it's something that he deals with. He said he is fine, so I know he'll be ready to play next time out." Nowitzki will have an MRI on Wednesday morning to check out his ankle and knee. "I'm just glad we got the win," Nowitzki said. "I don't think the knee is anything special. We're going to check it out (Wednesday), but I'll be all right. At least with the ankle, we know what it is and know it isn't going to get any worse. I'll ice it a couple of times tonight, come in (Wednesday) and see how it feels and get a little MRI. I sure hope nothing shows up on it." Although Nowitzki is their leader, the Mavericks are much more than him. They had six players in double figures, including Jason Terry, who had 18 points and 13 assists. "It was a good win for us," Terry said. "We had a great first half defensively. In the second half, we gave up 39 points in the third quarter. We cannot do that." Stackhouse scored 17 points off the bench and Erick Dampier added 16 for Dallas. Stackhouse and Dampier both returned last month from prolonged absences and were among a number of injured pivotal players for the Mavericks this season. "Getting everybody back, getting everybody back in the flow of things, especially Damp, is great," Stackhouse said. "It's good to have him back clogging up the middle like that." "I've got to get back to the way I was playing before I was injured," Dampier said. "However I can get myself back involved in the game, whether its getting post-ups or just getting close to the basket. I think the guys are looking for me now. They went through a stretch of 20 games where they didn't play with me, so I've got to get myself back into the rhthym of the game." DeShawn Stevenson scored a career-high 29 points for the Magic (35-39), who fell one-half game behind New Jersey into 10th place in the Eastern Conference. They are 1 1/2 games behind Philadelphia for the final playoff berth. "It was a good night for me but we've got to get a win," Stevenson said. "We're trying to get into the playoffs. We're in a situation where we've got to win a lot of games. Tonight was a chance. We've got to keep working hard and keep trying to win."
