Game StorySALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz used a decisive third-quarter run to bring the Portland Trail Blazers one step closer to a place they have not been in a long time. Matt Harpring scored 17 points and the Jazz got 47 more from their bench in a 90-79 rout of the Trail Blazers. Utah pushed a six-point halftime lead to 61-43 with a 13-1 third-quarter burst, during which Gordan Giricek scored seven of his nine points. After rookie Sebastian Telfair cut Portland's deficit to 86-77 with 1:08 remaining, Harpring made a layup to end the half-hearted rally. "I think their bench got into it (in the fourth)," Harpring said. "That's the NBA - peaks and valleys. To their credit, they didn't give up. They played through the whole game, so we had to come back and make sure we sustained the win. ... We'll take a win any way we can get it." "These games are important," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "Regardless of what everybody says, I want to move up as high as we can. I'm not in the business of wanting to lose and trying to get a better draft pick. ... I'm just trying to win every single game we play. I don't see anything else but that. If you don't (try to win), then it's acceptable to lose." The Blazers (24-49), who have lost five straight and 12 of 13, are just one game ahead of the last-place Jazz in the Northwest Division. Portland is in danger of slipping into the cellar for the first time since the 1975-76 season. "(Getting a higher draft pick) is the last thing we want to do," Portland interim coach Kevin Pritchard said. "It's ping-pong balls. Who cares about a few more ping-pong balls? This team, for sure, needs a win. We've played well enough to be able to win some games, but we haven't been able to pull it out." Rookie Kris Humphries and Ben Handlogten added 11 points apiece off the bench for Utah, which ranks second in the NBA in bench points. "I think our bench did good tonight," Harpring said. "Ben did an excellent job coming in, and that's what they've gotta do - just come in and play." Portland, which scored just 10 points and committed eight turnovers in the third period, has not defeated a Western Conference team on the road since the season opener. "We started turning the ball over, not moving the ball, not guarding guys the right way," Blazers forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. "This is a team that really executed, and if you don't guard them the correct way, they're going to pick you apart." Joel Przybilla was the lone bright spot for the Trail Blazers. The 7-1 center had 13 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks.
