Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Manu Ginobili led a balanced attack that inched the San Antonio Spurs closer to a division title. Ginobili scored 16 points as the Spurs had five players in double figures and 10 players who scored at least six points in a 91-82 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. In pursuit of the inaugural Southwest Division crown and its fourth title in the last five years, San Antonio (55-19) has a five-game lead over Dallas (54-20) with just eight games to go. The Spurs improved to a league-best 36-3 at home and will travel to the American Airlines Center to face the Mavericks on Thursday. "We could and should start playing better on the road and in general," Ginobili said. "We have been winning at home, but with the exception of the Houston game, we haven't played really well. We need to step up and play better." "I'm happy, I got a lot of rest tonight and I will be ready to go (Thursday) at Dallas," said Tony Parker, who scored 11 points in just 26 minutes. San Antonio also is just two games behind Phoenix (57-17) for the best record in the Western Conference. A pair of free throws by Chris Wilcox got Los Angeles as close as 49-45 with 7:56 left in the third quarter, but Ginobili responded with a 3-pointer. The All-Star built San Antonio's lead to 81-59 on a dunk with just over nine minutes remaining. "I haven't been playing very well lately," Ginobili said. "I have hustled a lot but haven't really put a good game together. I don't think I'm risking my body so I'll just keep at it." Brent Barry added 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the arc for San Antonio, which has won five of its last six games - all without injured superstar forward Tim Duncan. "We have a lot of guys who are professional and believe in each other," Barry said. "We believe in ourselves because we work very hard. We want our other guys back, but until then we have to hold the fort." "I thought it was great to see because a lot of people had a chance to play and they played well," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was a good team win. Bruce Bowen led the way in establishing our defense. I thought the big guys rebounded after that as the game progressed pretty well." Veteran forward Glenn Robinson made his Spurs debut after signing with the team Tuesday. Robinson, who was waived by the New Orleans Hornets in early March, had not played this season due to ankle tendinitis. "This is a championship atmosphere, so I came in with a lot of energy," said Robinson, who scored seven points in 14 minutes. "I was so excited I almost fouled out in the first half. My adrenaline was really flowing." Corey Maggette scored 23 points for the Clippers, who shot just 39 percent (29-of-75) as they completed a 2-5 road trip. "I was disappointed in the way we played tonight," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I thought that we had way too many turnovers, particularly in the first half. We didn't make shots, which could be the by-product of the last game of a long road trip. We just didn't play a very good game. "We will be happy to get home, but the fatigue from the road trip didn't play a factor in tonight's game. We should have played a much better game than we did tonight. We just missed too many shots tonight."
