Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan again did not suit up for the San Antonio Spurs. The rest of the team did, but did not really show up. Keith Van Horn scored 17 points and and Dirk Nowitzki added 16 in just 27 minutes as the Dallas Mavericks handed the Spurs their worst loss of the season, a 104-68 pounding. It was the biggest victory of the season for the Mavericks, who had lost four straight games to the Spurs, including the first three meetings this season. "This was a terrific effort by the guys tonight," Dallas coach Avery Johnson said. "A lot of positives happened, especially on the defensive end." Dallas, which never trailed, held a comfortable 45-34 cushion at the break but outscored San Antonio, 31-13, in the third quarter. Van Horn scored 10 points in the period for the Mavericks, who limited the Spurs to just 2-of-17 shooting in the quarter. "It was just a continuation of the way we started the game," Van Horn said. "We were a little concerned because we had been coming out sluggish in the third quarter. We were a little more focused going into the second half." "It was pretty embarrassing," said Spurs All-Star guard Manu Ginobili, who was held to two points on 1-of-9 shooting. "We know we are not playing well, but today was awful. We did a pretty decent job in the first half but the first four minutes of the third quarter killed us. Once they were all pumped up, with all the talent they have, it was impossible to come back. Those six minutes were where we made our biggest mistakes." The Mavericks (51-24), who won for the 10th time in 12 games and moved within four games of the Spurs (55-20) in the Southwest Division, led by as many as 39 points in the final 12 minutes. "A lot of it had to do with our defense - steals, limiting them to one shot, getting those long rebounds and really getting out into the open court," Van Horn said. "Our fast break is great, but it's even better when we can get those stops and get out and run." "We have led the division for the whole season, but now we have Seattle and Dallas closer than ever," Ginobili said. "We are not playing to get to the playoffs, we need to stay ahead and get better." Again without All-Star forward Duncan, who is out indefinitely with a badly sprained right ankle, San Antonio shot just 35 percent (27-of-78) overall and misfired on all 12 of its attempts from the arc. "Maybe sometimes we try to do to much, be too aggressive and make too many mistakes, especially me," Ginobili said. "But that's how it goes sometimes, I feel like I've got to give the team, or Tony (Parker) feels like he has to give too much when we are lacking without Tim. That drives us to make too many mistakes." "It was just a bad game," said Parker, who had 11 points but no assists. "We couldn't hit shots. They played great. You can't think about Timmy. He's not going to be there for a while. We just have to come back and play better." Dallas shot 53 percent (42-of-79) but made just 1-of-8 3-pointers.
