Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Mike Miller took advantage of Shaquille O'Neal's absence and helped improve the Memphis Grizzlies' playoff chances. Miller scored a season-high 30 points as the Grizzlies won their fourth game in five outings, a 97-81 triumph over the Miami Heat. Memphis (43-32) is one game behind Denver for seventh place in the Western Conference and leads ninth-place Minnesota by 3 1/2 games. "Every game counts now," Grizzlies swingman Bonzi Wells said. "You can't let any game go. You just have to keep fighting for every win and luckily we've been fighting. Hopefully, we can just continue to win. If we win, it will take care of everything." O'Neal, Miami's All-Star center and a leading MVP candidate, was sidelined for the second straight game with a stomach virus. The Grizzlies responded by making 12 of their first 18 shots, including five 3-pointers, for a 32-14 lead after the first quarter. "We came out tonight knowing we had to be ready to play, especially without the big guy down there," Miller said. "We came out, played hard, hit some shots early and got ourselves a lead." Wells scored 13 second-quarter points and helped Memphis extend the margin to 59-29 with 2:23 left in the half - Miami's largest deficit of the season. The Heat got within 14 points twice in the second half. But Miller scored 11 third-quarter points and hit his fifth 3-pointer with 2:53 left in the fourth for a 93-75 edge. "It was a huge game for Mike (Miller) tonight," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. "Every time we needed someone to hit a shot, it seemed like he stepped up and hit one." Jason Williams sparked the Grizzlies quick start by hitting all three shots from the arc and scored 11 points during a 28-7 run that closed the opening period. "The tempo and direction of the game was set early by Jason Williams," Fratello said. "He pushed the ball and hit some shots that led to 19 fast break points in the first half. He got the crowd into the game and got his teammates excited." Miami shot 33 percent (11-of-33) from the floor and managed just 35 points in the first half, while being outscored 24-2 in the paint. "That was a (butt) kicking from the beginning to the end," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We didn't play well offensively. Because we missed some shots early, we got out of our game. They played a great game. They were fabulous. We were awful." Pau Gasol scored 17 points, Wells had 15 and Williams 13 for the Grizzlies. Dwyane Wade scored 16 points, Damon Jones added 14 and Eddie Jones and Keyon Dooling netted 13 each for the Heat (56-20), who already have wrapped up home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs.
