Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Matt Harpring made sure the Utah Jazz were the ones that ended a losing streak. Harpring matched a season high with 28 points and the Jazz used a late run to post a 98-87 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. With Harpring leading the way, the Jazz snapped an eight-game road losing streak. It was the Jazz's first triumph away from the Delta Center since a 99-92 victory at Houston on February 27. New Orleans used a 13-4 run, capped by rookie J.R. Smith's three-point play with 4:15 remaining, to take its only lead of the second half at 85-84. But Harpring scored eight points in a game-ending 14-2 surge. "Our confidence was up, and we knew we were going to win the game," Harpring said. "I actually felt that attitude on the court. It just felt different tonight. I felt we were going to win, even when they came close." But it was a bittersweet victory for Harpring, who was ejected with 3.4 seconds remaining after verbally sparring with the Hornets' Lee Nailon, who also was kicked out. "(Nailon) just started yapping at me," Harpring said. "It was down at the other end (of the floor), and then when we came back he started yapping again. And then I told him to shut up. And he kept going. "I told him to shut up and quit whining at me, I don't care. Then that made him more angry. So we came down, and he started calling me ... whatever. Then we exchanged a few words. I thought the game was going to be over and I'm like, 'See you guys later.' And then (referee) Sean (Corbin) threw me out. I mean, three seconds left? It's ridiculous." Two nights after losing by 25 points at Minnesota, the Jazz shot 55 percent (34-of-62) from the floor, produced 23 assists and recorded 12 steals. Mehmet Okur added 12 points and nine rebounds and Keith McLeod scored six of his 12 points in the decisive run for Utah (24-51), which won the matchup of the Western Conference's two worst teams. "Anytime we can win a ballgame it feels good, especially with the season we've had," said McLeod, who added six assists and four steals and was 6-of-6 from the line in the final two minutes. "We were executing our plays. We were getting shots down low. We felt comfortable about the situation we were in." Smith scored 18 points and David West matched his career high with 15 for New Orleans, which lost its seventh straight home game. "It comes down to the fourth quarter. We blew it again," said Nailon, who scored 15 points. "You know how it is. Things can get away from you in a few minutes." After Smith gave the Hornets (18-57) the late lead, they scored only once on their final eight possessions and committed four turnovers. "Utah did all the things you are supposed to do when the game is on the line," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "We did all the things you shouldn't do when the game is on the line."
