Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki prevented the Dallas Mavericks from suffering a home loss to a lottery-bound squad. Nowitzki had team highs of 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five blocks as the Mavericks posted an 88-81 victory over the late-charging Utah Jazz. Nowitzki was not as pleased with his effort, but his coach was happy. "I'm not happy with my performance, especially in the fourth quarter," Nowitzki said. "I missed some shots that there's no way I should have missed. We ran a couple of plays for me and I didn't perform the way I wanted to. I'm not really that happy today, but there's another day tomorrow." "I like it whenever he has five or more assists," Dallas coach Avery Johnson said. "He was mad when I took him out in the first half. He played 40 minutes ... I'm glad he had some energy at the end of the game because we needed it." The win assured Dallas (52-24) of no worse than the fourth-best record in the Western Conference and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Dallas still has a remote chance of catching first-place San Antonio in the Southwest Division, trailing by 3 1/2 games with six to play. "It's good," Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. "It's good for the fans in Dallas and we definitely need it because we know we can win on the road, but it's good to be in a home-court advantage. We've had some struggles at home, but down the stretch we've been playing well at home. We are confident." Utah trailed, 68-53, after three quarters but went on a 12-2 run late to cut the deficit to 72-71 at 5:20 on a 3-pointer by Howard Eisley. Terry responded with a 3-pointer to give Dallas a 75-71 cushion. "We needed a bucket," Terry said. "Fortunately (guard Josh Howard) kicked it out. I was right there spotted up ready to do what I do." Utah again cut the deficit to one point again with 2:55 left when rookie Kirk Snyder's 3-pointer made it 81-80. Nowitzki responded with two free throws. After the teams exchanged empty possessions, Terry drove the lane and found Howard for a layup for an 83-80 lead with 54 seconds to go. On the ensuing possession, Nowitzki knocked the ball away from Utah's Mehmet Okur, slapping it off Okur's leg and out of bounds. Okur argued the play, was whistled for his second technical foul and ejected. "I thought I swiped down on the ball and it went off his leg," Nowitzki said. "That's why I was walking the other way. I don't know what he was complaining about. I thought I hit all ball, but you know how players are. He might have said something in his native language to the ref." Nowitzki made the technical free throw, then found Keith Van Horn for a layup that gave Dallas an 86-80 edge. Dallas led, 64-48, with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter after a 14-2 surge that included five points from Nowitzki. "That's what he does," Terry said. "You can't take that away from him. He's our guy. The other things (he does) are intangibles and when he brings that to the table we're really tough." Utah (24-52) was led by rookie Kris Humphries' 15 points and nine rebounds. Snyder added 12 points off the bench for the Jazz, who were swept in the season series by Dallas for the first time. Michael Finley added 13 points for Dallas, which won its seventh consecutive home game despite shooting under 42 percent from the field and committing 17 turnovers.
