Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Despite the absence of their two best players and undoubted fatigue, the San Antonio Spurs rode Tony Parker to within striking distance of the league's best record. Parker scored a career-high 35 points, including a driving layup with 2.9 seconds remaining to lift the Spurs to their second consecutive double-overtime victory, an exciting 136-134 triumph over the Golden State Warriors. Already without star Tim Duncan, the Spurs were without their other All-Star, Manu Ginobili, because of a stomach virus. Prior to the game, they had to place starting center Rasho Nesterovic on the injured list with a strained left ankle. "It's amazing," Spurs center Nazr Mohammed said. "It shows a lot of character having so many injured players and still getting the win. It will build confidence going into the playoffs." Making matters worse was that the Spurs needed two extra sessions Saturday to best the Los Angeles Clippers, 125-124. "I thought we really should have won," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "I have to give a lot of credit to San Antonio coming off back-to-back double overtime games. That's why they've won championships and why they win games. They have a good group of guys who know how to compete." Sunday's win moved San Antonio (57-20) within one-half game of Phoenix for the NBA's best record while the Golden State had its season-high eight-game winning streak halted. "We're going to try to get first place even if we're shorthanded," Parker said. "We're going to fight until the end and see what happens. We're not giving up." In this one, Parker made the most of the second chance afforded to him by Mike Dunleavy Jr., who stepped out of bounds after grabbing a defensive rebound with 16 seconds left in the second overtime. Parker then ran the clock, drove down the lane and floated a left-handed layup over Baron Davis. "Tony was just stupendous as a leader," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He played all those minutes, and came in and ran the show very well. He played a great game. Both teams really showed a lot of character. Both played aggressively at both ends. Where they got the energy to keep going out there, I have no idea." "It's a game of inches and the shot almost went in and coming down with that rebound, I was right there," Dunleavy said. "I thought I was going to come down in bounds and I had probably the edge of my shoe on the line and it's just how it works. Unfortunately, those inches didn't go our way tonight." The Spurs were down, 93-82, early in the fourth when Brent Barry - who was in the lineup for Ginobili - scored eight of his 17 points in a 12-2 burst that cut the deficit to one point. Davis then began his amazing fourth quarter, where he scored 14 of his 38 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Parker seemed to answer every time and in the final 2 1/2 minutes of regulation, Davis and Parker accounted 18 of the 24 points scored between the teams. "(Davis) is a great player, great point guard and he gets everybody involved," Parker said. "It was a great matchup tonight, I had a lot of fun competing against him. To come here and win after two overtimes with the Clippers, shorthanded, showed a lot character. We didn't want to give up. We just tried to stay close and win the game." "We could have won and we didn't but we just have to bounce back," Davis said. "That's what NBA basketball is all about and you just have to tip your hat to San Antonio, they're champions. They've been there and they know how to win. We're still learning and growing." Parker gave San Antonio a 117-115 lead on a jumper over Davis with 5.9 seconds left in regulation, but Davis answered by driving through a crowd of defenders to level the contest as time expired. The two continued their battle in the first overtime by combining for 11 more. However, Parker missed a pull-up jumper with 3.3 seconds remaining in the first overtime. Dunleavy had a chance to win it for Golden State, but his runner rimmed out as time expired. Mohammed collected 19 points and 15 rebounds - 10 offensive - starting in the place of Nesterovic while Robert Horry and Bruce Bowen added 17 points apiece. "Tonight I played my game, getting the offensive boards, along with just going out and playing hard," Mohammed said. "It's not hard, just different from what I'm used to. I have some tendencies left over and it's difficult to break those and do what the coach wants here." The last team to play double-overtime games on back-to-back nights was the Vancouver Grizzlies on February 16 and 17, 1999, when they played one double and one triple OT game.
