Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks appeared headed for their 10th straight loss until Stephon Marbury and Mike Sweetney did something about it. Sweetney put home Marbury's miss at the overtime buzzer as the Knicks ended a nine-game slide with a 113-112 victory over the Indiana Pacers, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. Marbury and Sweetney combined to erase a six-point deficit in the final minute and give the lottery-bound Knicks (30-46) their first win since March 23. Marbury had 17 points and a season-high 19 assists and Sweetney had 20 points and nine rebounds. "At the end of the game, you just put the ball in your best player's hands and let him make a play," Knicks coach Herb williams said. "Stephon didn't settle for the pull-up jumper and took it to the basket. When you do that in those situations, you get bodies off of bodies and Sweet was able to get inside for the tip." In control for most of the game, New York blew a 12-point fourth-quarter lead and trailed, 104-101, with 18 seconds left after two free throws by Knicks killer Reggie Miller, who scored 34 points. On the next possession, Marbury found Kurt Thomas open in the right corner. The power forward sank just the seventh 3-pointer of his 10-year career to tie the game with 11 seconds to go. "That play definitely wasn't designed for me," said Thomas, who has two 3-pointers tis season. "I knew we needed a three. We set up a screen for Jamal (Crawford) and they followed him, so stephon threw it right out to me and I hit it." But the Knicks went scoreless for almost the first three minutes of overtime. Miller had a pair of hoops as the Pacers opened a 112-106 lead with 1:06 to play. Sweetney put home a reverse layup and was fouled by Dale Davis. His free throw halved the deficit with 59 seconds left, and after a turnover by Stephen Jackson, Marbury scored on a drive and was fouled, also by Davis. He missed the free throw, leaving the Knicks with a one-point deficit with 31 seconds to go. The Pacers committed a shot-clock violation, setting up the final possession. From above the arc, Marbury drove left and put up a scoop shot that was well off the mark. But Sweetney sneaked in and put home the rebound just before the buzzer sounded. "Normally, teams leave a man sitting at the elbow to force the jumper," Marbury said. "Tonight, we did a great job getting to the basket and scoring a lot of points in the paint. We missed some free throws down the stretch and made it tough for ourselves, but it all worked out." "I felt someone leave me to go for the block and I just stepped in and got position," Sweetney said. "That was the first time in my life that I've had a game-winner and it feels good to do it and end a losing streak." New York improved to 5-2 in overtime and Indiana fell to 5-3. "We've been in these close situations all year long and haven't been able to pull them out," sweetney said. "Tonight, we found a way to get the win." Crawford scored 32 points and Thomas added 15 and 12 boards for the Knicks, who had lost their last eight visits to Conseco Fieldhouse. Jackson scored 27 points and Anthony Johnson added 18 and 16 assists for the Pacers (41-35), who fell into a tie with Washington and Boston for the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. "It's very disappointing to be up in regulation and give up a big three in the corner. There's no justification for that," Johnson said. "I had some bad shots and turnovers in overtime and our defense got away from us. We just let this one go." The Knicks held an 86-74 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Pacers rallied on a flurry of 3-pointers. Miller gave Indiana its first lead since 4-2 with a 3-pointer and Jackson sank another for a 99-95 advantage with 2:19 left. Baskets by Crawford and Thomas tied it before Jackson drained another 3-pointer to make it 102-99 with 41 seconds to play. "To have a home loss, after winning six in a row, and agaist a struggling team ... it's tough," Miller said. "We made silly fouls and silly mistakes down the stretch and they executed when they had to. We were up by six with a minute to go and couldn't close them out and that's very disappointing."
