Game StorySACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Already trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Los Angeles Lakers did themselves no favors by surrendering 43 points in the third quarter. Kenny Thomas scored 14 of his career-high 32 points in the third quarter and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Kings cruised to a 124-105 triumph over the defenseless Lakers. "If we're knocking down shots we're going to be hard to beat," said Thomas, who made 10-of-14 shots. "We were playing defense (today) really well, too, helping each other out the whole time. We had everybody going to the boards." Mike Bibby added 11 of his 24 points in the third-quarter blitz for Sacramento, which shot 70 percent (16-of-23) in the period to open a 99-81 cushion. "We needed this win," Bibby said. "We're still trying to get to 50 wins. We had a good third quarter, they were missing shots and we were making them. We just played an all-around good game." The Kings (48-30) had seven players score in double figures and shot 52 percent (50-of-97) overall as they opened a 1 1/2-game lead over Houston for fifth place in the Western Conference with four games remaining. Sacramento plays three of its final four games on the road, starting Friday in a rematch with the Lakers in Los Angeles. "I think we need to finish up these last four real strong," Thomas said. "Going into the playoffs with a lot of momentum, we're going to need that." The Lakers, who will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1994, were manhandled on the glass, getting outrebounded by a whopping 62-32. The Kings had 24 offensive rebounds to the Lakers' 20 defensive rebounds. "The 62-32 rebounding difference kind of says it all," Lakers coach Frank Hamblen said. "The Kings played very well. We didn't." "The 24 offensive rebounds was key," said Kings coach Rick Adelman, whose team had 29 second-chance points. "Kenny obviously played terrific the whole game." This one had all the drama of a Harlem Globetrotters-Washington Generals matchup after the first quarter as Sacramento easily avenged a 115-99 home loss to LA on December 16. The Lakers ended the first quarter tied at 28-28 but shot just 31 percent (8-for-26) in the second period. Sacramento took advantage, keyed by a late 13-4 run that pushed the lead to 56-42 with just over a minute to go in the half. Kobe Bryant scored 18 points, Caron Butler added 17 and Chucky Atkins 15 and nine assists for Los Angeles (34-43), which absorbed its 14th defeat in 16 games. "The rivalry is over," Bryant said. "We had our battles in the past and maybe in the future the rivalry will spark back up."
