Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- In the opener of a critical four-game road trip, the Memphis Grizzlies did not look or sound like a playoff team. An apparent tiff between point guard Jason Williams and coach Mike Fratello on Sunday was followed by an unenthusiastic 110-89 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, who rode 23 points from Josh Howard to their fourth straight win. Memphis (44-33) had won three straight games to reduce its magic number for clinching a second straight postseason berth to one. However, the Grizzlies have a tough remaining schedule, including this trip against prospective playoff teams Dallas, Houston, Denver and San Antonio. "It's a tough road trip against some really good teams who are all playing for something," Grizzlies forward Shane Battier said. "We've got our work cut out for ourselves. We finally have our full rotation back healthy. We can throw out some different combinations. If we can jell, we can get a couple and get some momentum going in." During Sunday's home win over Charlotte, a third-quarter disagreement between Williams and Fratello resulted in the starting point guard's benching in favor of Earl Watson for the first eight minutes. Williams yelled at Fratello from the bench. Against Dallas, Williams played just 20 minutes, collecting six points and one assist. he did not speak with the media afterward and Fratello would only say he didn't start "because I chose to start Earl." When asked if the situation was a distraction to start the road trip, Battier laughed and said, "No, not really, not really. At this point it's about winning. Guys are focused on getting one more win and clinching that playoff spot." The Grizzlies never led after the early moments of the second quarter. They trailed, 79-71, entering the final period and never got any closer, succumbing to a surge by the Mavericks, who had All-Star Dirk Nowitzki sitting on the bench. Memphis shot just 42 percent (34-of-82) from the floor, was outrebounded, 48-34, and outscored on the fast break, 15-2. "They controled the boards for the whole game," forward Pau Gasol said. "That gave them a lot of second opportunities, too many actually. They hit shots late in the game and made the difference even bigger." The Grizzlies wilted down the stretch as they were repeatedly beaten by Howard and rookie point guard Devin Harris. "It's tough when a guy outhustles people," Fratello said. "When a guy gets offensive rebounds and puts them back in, he's finding ways to score without them running plays for him necessarily, and then the couple of times they do run plays for them, he does what he's supposed to do with the ball." Harris had a three-point play to make it 86-73, then found Michael Finley and Howard for 3-pointers to push the lead to 92-77 with 7:24 to go. Howard added a tip-in and follow dunk before Finley's jumper made it 105-83 with 3:01 left. "To me, (Howard's) one of the greatest slashers in the league," Nowitzki said. "He always finds a way to get in there and get his hands on the ball and get offensive rebounds. He really took advantage. They put Gasol on him and put the smaller guy on me. I think he really made that matchup pay for us and it was fun to watch." Nowitzki scored 19 points - none in the final period - and Finley added 17 for Dallas (53-24), which is assured of home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Erick Dampier had 13 rebounds and Howard snared nine. "Josh is our energy guy," guard Jason Terry said. "He's our guy who does all the dirty work, so when we see him get 20 points, we know we're on the winning end and we're happy for him. He doesn't usually get to touch the ball offensively a lot of the times but when he gets 20, we're excited for him."
