Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got a look at NBA history. Jim Jackson made seven 3-pointers and Steve Nash handed out 16 assists as the Phoenix Suns pulled away for a 108-97 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. On the night the Lakers honored their 1985 championship team that featured Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers were overwhelmed in the fourth quarter by the NBA's highest-scoring team. After Devean George's basket with 6:43 remaining gave the Lakers a 93-89 lead, the Suns responded with a 15-4 run to take control. Jackson had a pair of 3-pointers and Amare Stoudemire - held to one point in the first three quarters - contributed a pair of dunks in the decisive run. Jackson scored a season-high 25 points and led a long-range barrage for the Suns, who went 19-of-37 from 3-point range. Set up most of the time by Nash, Jackson went 7-of-11 from the arc and Joe Johnson, who scored 26 points, was 6-of-10. "You pretty much know what you're doing when you are in a rhythm," Jackson said. "We shot the ball great from the 3-point line and we had a lot of penetration. That's what happens when you have a great point guard that can break down the defense." "When we come out and shoot the ball well from the outside, we are almost guaranteed a win," said Stoudemire, who scored nine points in the fourth quarter. "Jim Jackson and Joe are incredible from behind the arc." Last Monday, the Suns made a then-franchise-record 17 3-pointers in a victory over the Lakers. This barrage helped Phoenix establish an NBA single-season record with 742 3-pointers. Dallas held the old mark, making 735 in 1995-96. "That is the way our team is built," Nash said. "It's not too much of a surprise." "They got good looks," Lakers coach Frank Hamblen said. "And we stressed that today - let them off the 3-point line. We changed our pick-and-roll defense so hopefully they wouldn't be as open." Shawn Marion added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns (58-19), who moved one game ahead of San Antonio for the NBA's best record. "We buckled down tonight the last five minutes of the game and stopped them from doing what they wanted to do," Marion said. "We took them out of their game and ran away with it. That says a lot about our team." Kobe Bryant had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles (34-44), which lost for the seventh time in eight games. Trailing 54-52 at the half, the Suns opened the third quarter with a 12-2 surge, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Johnson. But the Lakers responded with the next 11 points, including five from Jumaine Jones. "They do such a good job of running," Bryant said. "They get their big's out and run the floor extremely well. You find yourself protecting the basket when they have shooters behind the three-point line."
