Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion restored order just in time for the Phoenix Suns. Stoudemire and Marion helped fuel a decisive fourth-quarter surge as the Suns pulled away for a 99-85 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in a matchup of the best and worst teams in the Western Conference. Playing for the fourth time in five nights, the Suns found themselves trailing, 77-73, with 10:56 remaining in the fourth quarter following a basket by rookie J.R. Smith. But Marion drilled a 3-pointer to trigger a 15-2 surge that lasted just over 7 1/2 minutes. Stoudemire scored six points in the spurt that Marion capped with a dunk with 3:23 to go, giving the Suns an 88-79 lead. "You're talking about a team that has won 59 games for a reason," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "They know when the game is on the line and what to do. When the game is on the line, you just have to execute on both ends of the floor, and we just didn't do that." Stoudemire scored 11 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and Marion finished with 18, 17 rebounds and six blocks for the Suns (59-19), who remained one game ahead of San Antonio for the NBA's best record with four to play. "Games like that are always hard to get up for when they're not playing too well and we're doing more than anyone ever expected," said Stoudemire, who also grabbed 11 rebounds. "Those types of games are the games that we pretty much have to get a win, and we did." "It was ugly, but at the same time it was pretty because we got a win," Marion said. The Suns played without forward Quentin Richardson, who was sidelined with a sprained left ankle. But his presence hardly was missed as Jim Jackson stepped up for the second straight game. After making seven 3-pointers and scoring a season-high 25 points in Monday's 108-97 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, Jackson was just as good in this one. He scored 20 points, going 6-of-7 from the arc. "He stepped up huge for us," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He is shooting the ball really well. We don't want Quentin (Richardson) to be hurt but the bright side is Jimmy Jackson gets 43 minutes and that is going to help as we go forward." In what was a tight first half, Stoudemire scored 14 points as the Suns settled for a 54-48. Smith scored nine points in an 18-7 surge that Jackson Vroman capped with a layup, giving the Hornets a 66-61 lead with 6:03 left in the third quarter. But Jackson, who made his first six attempts from the arc, hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Suns closed the quarter on a 12-7 run to tie the game at 73-73. Joe Johnson added 16 points and Steve Nash handed out 13 assists for the Suns, who shot 42 percent (33-of-79) and went 13-of-17 from the arc. Smith scored 23 points and P.J. Brown had 15 rebounds for New Orleans (18-59), which had a three-game road winning streak stopped. "They just executed better than we did down the stretch," Smith said. "That's the type of team they are, they get up and down the court and execute."
