Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce made sure that the Boston Celtics did not suffer a letdown - and clinched a playoff berth. Pierce scored 32 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 19 seconds remaining, as the Boston Celtics clinched a postseason berth with a 111-108 triumph over the Milwaukee Bucks. "One of the goals was to get in, but it's going to be important to stay motivated and get home-court advantage for the playoffs," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "It's so important because the Eastern Conference playoffs are going to be a doghouse fight." After Milwaukee's Maurice Williams made two free throws to tie the game at 108-108 with 40 seconds remaining, Boston gave the ball to Pierce and cleared out. After a couple of dribbles, Pierce hit one of his patented step-back jumpers to give Boston a 110-108 lead. "We have one of the more explosive teams in the league," Pierce said. "When we play unselfish ball, people can't just focus on one of us because we have so many weapons to go at people with. I was glad we got this one." On Milwaukee's next possession, top weapon Michael Redd was well-defended by Pierce and missed a jumper in the lane rebounded by Boston's Ricky Davis, who was immediately fouled. "I had a good look which makes it more frustrating that it didn't go in," Redd said. "I had a great opportunity, but (Pierce) made a tough shot." Davis made the first free throw but missed the second. On the ensuing rebound, Boston's Antoine Walker gathered the loose ball and inexplicably shot it. The rebound was corraled by Milwaukee's Joe Smith, who called timeout with one second remaining. Milwaukee could not find Redd on its final possession, and Desmond Mason ended up throwing the inbounds pass out of bounds. "Obviously in games like this, you can't have those kinds of breakdowns, but we had our chances and just couldn't convert," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. On a go-ahead jumper by Pierce, Boston (43-35) defeated Philadelphia on Tuesday to open a three-game lead in the Atlantic Division. Its win and a loss by New Jersey clinched Boston's fourth consecutive playoff berth. "It was huge for us to come out after last night and come in here and get the win to clinch the playoff berth," said Walker, who had 17 points and nine rebounds. "We've showed over the last month that we can play some good ball." Pierce made 9-of-15 shots and 12-of-12 free throws, adding five rebounds and five assists. Boston had lost 10 of its last 11 games in Milwaukee and had not won the season series from the Bucks since 1995-96. "We knew that we weren't going to get anything from this building, so if we were going to muster anything, it was going to have to come from within and we did that in stretches," Rivers said. The Celtics trailed, 97-96, before Gary Payton made a 3-pointer with 6:04 to go. On Boston's next possession, Pierce contorted his body on a drive and found Payton for a layup with 5:24 remaining that gave Boston a 101-97 advantage. Payton scored 12 points and moved past David Robinson into sole possession of 25th place on the NBA's all-time list. Payton added 10 assists and is sixth on the league's all-time assists list. "It's an accomplishment," Payton said. "But we've got a job to do here and that's win some games down the stretch because we've got Philly and New Jersey coming down our throats." Redd led Milwaukee (29-49) with 28 points and Dan Gadzuric added a career-high 22 with 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who have lost 12 of their last 14 games.
