Game StorySEATTLE (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki's hot shooting kept the Seattle SuperSonics from clinching a division title. Nowitzki scored 12 of his 31 points in the final eight minutes to lead the Dallas Mavericks to their fifth consecutive win, a 95-90 triumph over the slumping SuperSonics. Needing one win to clinch the Northwest Division and its first divisional crown in seven years, Seattle (50-28) has dropped six straight games. "The thing is to get a win," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We haven't had a win in six games. That's the focus, just to win a ballgame. If we win that next game it will be a division title." Nowitzki missed his first three shots but connected on 11 of his next 13 attempts as Dallas improved to 12-2 since coach Avery Johnson replaced Don Nelson on March 19. Johnson has stressed defense to a team that was primarily known for its up-tempo style of play. Dallas has allowed an average 91.1 points in its last 14 games after yielding 98.5 prior to that. "We've been doing a great job every night of getting a consistent defensive effort," Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. "That's the key for this team." Seattle's Antonio Daniels tied the game at 87-87 with a layup at the 1:30 mark, but Nowitzki countered with a pair of free throws. Daniels had a chance to tie the game on the Sonics' next possession, but he split a pair from the line. Terry, who scored 15, connected on a baseline jumper to give the Mavericks a 91-88 advantage with 46 seconds left. Daniels then missed a jumper and Nowitzki sealed the victory with a fadeaway baseline shot over Rashard Lewis with 17 seconds to go. "The last few minutes are the most important ones," Nowitzki said. "We did all the things we needed to win down the stretch. We got some stops, we finally got some rebounds, we drove the ball and got to the line and made some big shots." "They hit some tough shots," said Daniels, who missed Seattle's previous three games because of a sore left knee. "Dirk hit a tough turnaround jump shop with a hand up (in his face). Then I missed a shot with 30 seconds left, so we didn't hit the shots when we needed to." Seattle's Ray Allen scored 19 points, but only three in the fourth quarter. "We did a great job on Ray," Dallas forward Jerry Stackhouse said. "He's a volume shooter and he's going to take a lot of shots. We made him work and he didn't have a good shooting night." "We were really trying to stay on Allen and Lewis and just try to make some of the other guys beat us," Johnson said. "You just kind of play the percentages." Playing for the first time in seven games, Lewis finished with 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting. He had been sidelined with a bruised right foot. "(Lewis) looked like he was a little winded and I thought he was moving a little slow getting to his spots offensively," McMillan said. "But, that's to be expected after coming back after being off for so long." Stackhouse scored 14 points off the bench for Dallas (54-24), which is locked into the fourth seed in the Western Conference.
