Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- In their biggest game of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers were outplayed at Gund Arena by a team they had clobbered at home by 25 points in January. Jamal Crawford and Maurice Taylor combined for 23 points in the fourth quarter as the New York Knicks prevented the Cleveland Cavaliers from inching closer to a postseason berth with a 95-89 victory. It was perfect revenge for the Knicks, who absorbed a 104-79 loss in their last trip to Cleveland, on January 8. New York shot poorly then, but went 51 percent (38-of-75) from the field in this one. "We got outplayed tonight," interim Cavaliers coach Brendan Malone said. "They beat us to loose balls, second shots. Crawford and Mo Taylor shot the ball very well for them going down the stretch and we had no answers." Looking for their first playoff appearance in seven years, the Cavaliers (40-38) are tied with Philadelphia for seventh place in the Eastern Conference and hold a two-game advantage over ninth-place New Jersey. Cleveland does not own the tiebreaker against either team and has three of its last four games on the road, where it is 12-26 so far this season. "It's disappointing," Cleveland star LeBron James said. "We didn't have a sense of urgency tonight. I don't know why." Guaranteed their fourth straight losing season, the Knicks captured their second straight road win despite receiving no points from star guard Stephon Marbury in the second half. New York also struggled at the line in the final 43 seconds, missing six straight attempts. "We were just trying to get a win," Taylor said. "We weren't concerned with playing the role of spoiler. We want to win for (coach) Herb (Williams) and finish strong." Cleveland, which shot just 4-of-17 from the arc, finished the third quarter with a 19-5 run to grab a 72-70 lead. After a dunk by Cleveland's Robert Traylor opened the final period, New York responded with a 15-1 spurt to go ahead, 85-75, on a 3-pointer by Crawford with 5:27 left. New York frequently worked the pick-and-roll, taking advantage of slow-footed center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who had missed four games with a dislocated right ring finger. "We found what was working and we stuck with it," Taylor said. "(Ilgauskas) is not the best on pick-and-rolls. We wanted to keep him moving." "I think we always have a tough time defending pick-and-rolls when (Ilgauskas) is forced to defend small (Taylor)," Malone said. "And that's what happened tonight." Taylor, who finished with 16 points, scored eight and Crawford hit two shots from the arc during the spurt. The Cavaliers closed to 93-89 on a dunk by Traylor with 1:26 left but missed their final three shots. "LeBron made some threes to make it interesting," Malone said. "But we just didn't handle the ball well going down the stretch." Crawford scored 25 points and Marbury chipped in 14 for the Knicks, who won for just the second time in their last 12 games. "We wanted to show each other there's still a lot of fight (in our team)," Knicks center Kurt Thomas said. James scored 27 points on 7-of-25 shooting and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds for Cleveland, which had a two-game winning streak snapped. "We wanted to make (James) into a jump-shooter because the one thing he can do is he can get into the paint," Williams said. "He's going to draw fouls and he's going to find other guys for open shots. We just tried to make him shoot outside as much as possible and keep him out of the lane."
