Game StoryTORONTO (Ticker) -- Vince Carter was treated rudely by fans in his return North of the Border. He returned the favor by showing no love to franchise that he became the face for. Carter scored 39 points in an emotional return to the city where became a star as the New Jersey Nets rallied for a critical 101-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Carter spent the first six-plus seasons of his career in Toronto, becoming a perennial All-Star and the player that identified the franchise. But after an array of injuries, Carter became disenchanted and was traded to the Nets in December for Aaron Williams, Eric Williams, Alonzo Mourning and two first-round picks. After admitting he did not always give his all with the Raptors, Carter was greeted with boos during warmups and with chants of "V.C. (stinks)" for much of the night by a boisterous crowd. Extra security was on hand for Carter's return to the Air Canada Centre Unfazed by the crowd, Carter had little trouble having another big game at the expense of his former teammates. He scored 24 points in the second half as the Nets overcame a 55-41 halftime deficit. "I noticed it (the crowd response) before the game and halftime but my focus was on getting the job done and getting a win," Carter said. "In the second half I settled down and my shots started to fall. I understand the situation and I'm happy with the way things turned out. This was a fun game, believe it or not." Carter made 15-of-26 shots en route to his 22nd 30-point game with the Nets. He capped his night by tearing up at mid-court at the conclusion of the game while hugging former teammate Jalen Rose. "For a long time, people have been talking about this game and I was looking forward to it and it helped me focus and do what I needed to do," Carter said. "The big picture of it all is that we are playing for a playoff position and I knew I had to play well." Jason Kidd added 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Nets (39-40), who pulled within one game of Cleveland for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth with three games to play. New Jersey holds the tiebreaker over Cleveland. "It was a big game and we got a big win on the road," Kidd said. "With all of the commotion about Vince coming back, I thought the team handled it well and played a good game, especially in the second half. Vince was incredible and just dominated the game and we played off of him and that's what we've been doing since he got here." Rose scored 20 points to lead the Raptors, who failed in their bid to win consecutive games for the first time since late February. "The first half were doing everything right and the second half was just the opposite," Rose said. "I give their team a lot of credit for coming in here and beating us in a hostile environment." The Raptors shot 65 percent (22-of-35) and led by as many as 16 points in the first half. But Carter scored 12 points in the the third quarter as the Nets got back in the game. Jason Collins' dunk with 5:12 left gave the Nets their first lead at 64-63, and Carter followed with a 3-pointer. Toronto reclaimed a 74-73 lead entering the fourth period. Brian Scalabrine, who scored 16 points and added eight rebounds, split two free throws with 7:47 left, snapping an 80-80 tie and giving the Nets the lead for good. After Carter and Matt Bonner traded baskets, Kidd made a 3-pointer and layup to give the Nets an 88-82 lead with 5:32 remaining. "We weren't playing team ball, plain and simple," said Raptors forward Chris Bosh, who scored 18 points. "The things we were doing in the first half to get up 16 points we weren't doing in the second." Morris Peterson added 15 points for the Raptors, who shot just 30 percent (9-of-30) in the second half.
