Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls made up for the loss of their leading scorer with a balanced effort. Rookies Chris Duhon, Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni led seven players in double figures with 17 points apiece as the Bulls rolled to a 117-77 victory over the awful Orlando Magic. "I thought we were really sharp with the game plan," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "I thought tonight we took the open shot and our guys made that open shot." On Thursday, the Bulls absorbed a serious blow to their postseason chances when they learned center Eddy Curry would miss the rest of the season and playoffs with an irregular heartbeat. "Not to downplay the situation, but everybody is out there playing for him," Bulls forward-center Tyson Chandler said. In Curry's absence, Duhon and Gordon jumped all over the Magic, who played without any enthusiasm a day after they were officially eliminated from playoff contention. "What did I see out there? A tired undermanned group that found out they were just knocked out of the playoffs," Orlando coach Chris Jent said. "It's only human nature that you're disappointed and upset when you don't make the playoffs." "They just came out on fire and stayed that way the whole game," Magic rookie forward Dwight Howard said. "I think we didn't give 100 percent effort. I know I didn't give 100 percent effort. You just can't have mental lapses like that." Duhon made six of his first seven shots, including three 3-pointers, for 15 points and Gordon added 10 off the bench as Chicago shot 51 percent in the first half to grab a 60-41 lead. The lead grew to 110-66 on a jumper by Jannero Pargo with 2:47 remaining before the Bulls finished with their largest margin of victory this season. The previous high was a 110-78 triumph over Philadelphia on January 12. "Give the credit to our starters, they came out focused," Pargo said. "When we do that, we are a very tough team to beat." Pargo scored 13 points and Chandler added 12 and 14 rebounds for Chicago, which shot 54 percent (48-of-89) to snap a two-game losing streak. With the win, the Bulls improved to 45-34, a game ahead of Washington for fourth place in the Eastern Conference and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. "This was definitely a big game for us," Chandler said. "We had to bounce back and we needed this game for the sake of keeping space between us and the teams chasing us." Steve Francis scored 16 points and DeShawn Stevenson and Stacey Augmon chipped in 15 each for Orlando (35-44), which has lost six straight games and 17 of 21.
