Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- They were forced to sweat it out shorthanded, but the Los Angeles Clippers ended an impressive home schedule with another win. Bobby Simmons scored 21 points and Elton Brand added 20 as the Clippers posted a 94-89 victory over the New Orleans Hornets, who have lost seven straight. With the win, the Clippers matched their second-best home record (27-14) since the franchise moved to Los Angeles before the 1984-85 season. The 1991-92 team won 29 home games and the '92-'93 squad won 27 while playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. "It was a great season at home by anybody's standards," Brand said. "If we had won some of those close games and those overtime games, we wouldn't be talking about this being our last home game." Already without leading scorer Corey Maggette for the rest of the season, Los Angeles played this one without centers Chris Kaman and Chris Wilcox, who both sat with minor injuries. Despite their lack of size up front and a third-quarter swoon, the Clippers managed to survive, impressing coach Mike Dunleavy. "The typical process is to learn to win at home," Dunleavy said. "Get that understanding and try to carry it over on the road and that is our hope for next year." Dunleavy's club will miss the playoffs for the eighth straight season largely due to its 9-30 road record, among the worst in the NBA. The Clippers led by as many as 17 points late in the first half but found themselves in an 83-83 game after Hornets forward Bostjan Nachbar converted a three-point play with 5:39 to play. But Simmons, Brand and a strong defensive effort down the stretch kept New Orleans from claiming the lead. "I found my role on this team," Simmons said. "Rebounding and being consistent every night. Everyone stepped their game up even though we are a young team. Night in and night out we played hard. It was no different tonight." Simmons assisted on a go-ahead jumper by Brand before scoring five straight Los Angeles points for a 90-85 edge with 66 seconds left. He made his last five free throws to seal it, including a pair with 24 seconds left. "We let our lead slip away and we were kind of hurting with our bench but we got the 'W' and that's the most important thing," Brand said. "We won 27 home wins with a slew of overtime games and we just want to keep improving. I'm excited already about next year." The Clippers were 3-6 in overtime games, each of the nine coming at home. Following Nachbar's three-point play, the Hornets were held to just two free throws over a span of 5:13, missing all seven shots from the floor. Rookie J.R. Smith and Dan Dickau scored 17 points apiece for New Orleans, which hosts Los Angeles on Wednesday in the final game of the season for both teams. The Hornets fell to 0-4 on their road trip and finished 7-34 away from home. New Orleans center P.J. Brown had some strong words for his team's road record. "We have been unsuccessful on the road," Brown said. "It has been horrible. I am sure I can think of a lot more adjectives to describe it. "It comes down to pride. We have two more games left. If we play heady games on our home floor then I don't care who is coming in. We just have to wait and see if this team has enough pride and passion for the game to step up and try and close this season out the right way."
