Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- On a team loaded with offensive firepower, Amare Stoudemire was a one-man wrecking crew. Stoudemire scored 22 of his 38 points in the third quarter and the Phoenix Suns moved within one game of the clinching the league's best record with a 116-98 victory over the Sacramento Kings. The Suns (61-19) lead San Antonio by two games in the race for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs with two games remaining. The Spurs own the tiebreaker over the Suns. Stoudemire, the league's only player ranked in the top 10 in scoring and shooting percentage, made 9-of-10 shots and outscored the Kings by one point in the third quarter. During a five-minute stretch, he scored 14 of 16 Suns points. "I just came out then with motivation," Stoudemire said. "I wanted to set the tone. I was just trying to rebound and defend. But while I was doing that, my offense was coming around as well." With 5:46 left in the period, Stoudemire caught a two-hand touch pass by Steve Nash, made a one-handed dunk, was fouled by Mike Bibby and sank the free throw to give the Suns a 83-61 lead. "That was pretty sweet," Stoudemire said. "I didn't know he was throwing it at me. But I saw it floating in the air and I went and got it." "In the third quarter, Amare just dominated," Nash said. "That was us at our best. Hopefully, we can have some of that in the playoffs. But at the same time know how to grind it out." Joe Johnson made three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 22 points in the third quarter, including a shot from the arc that opened a 99-73 edge with 28 seconds to play. Shawn Marion and Leandro Barbosa scored 17 points apiece and Nash had 11 assists for Phoenix. The Suns have won 32 more games than last season, tying the 1979-1980 Boston Celtics for the third-best turnaround in history. "I thought our defense was pretty good and it got better as we went along," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We had a sluggish game on the offensive end. In the third, the offense flowed a lot better." The Kings (49-31), who saw their four-game winning streak end, played without leading scorer Peja Stojakovic, who sat out with a strained left groin. "I don't think in the first half when we had our chances, we kept our focus in transition defense at all," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "In the third quarter, we talked about coming out and getting the first spurt. We made so many mistakes in transition with guys running past and not getting the shooters." Eddie House came off the bench to score 17 points and Bibby had 16 for Sacramento, which shot 38 percent (40-of-105) from the floor. "In the second half, we didn't get any stops," Bibby said. "It is that simple. We didn't get any stops and they got easy baskets, layups and dunks." Sacramento is tied with Houston for fifth place in the Western Conference.
