Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ray Allen had another big performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves, whose postseason dreams are over. Allen collected 34 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to a 109-94 victory over the Timberwolves, who were officially eliminated from playoff contention. After reaching the Western Conference finals last season and predictions of an NBA title this season, contract squabbles and inconsistent play led to Minnesota's first postseason absence since 1996. "Everybody is disappointed," Timberwolves interim coach Kevin McHale said. "You can't come in this year with the kind of expectation level we had and have this type of season. That's ridiculous." "We started off (the season) very individual," superstar forward Kevin Garnett said. "A lot of it came from the presence that we had last year and the things we accomplished last year." The loss allowed Memphis to clinch the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. While the Timberwolves stumbled, the surprising Supersonics swept in and won the Northwest Division to claim the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. "The season is not over," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We want to try to get back to normal as possible with the rotation. We always talk about players getting in a rhythm, but as a coach you have to get in a rhythm." Seattle led almost the entire game thanks to Allen, who scored 32 against Minnesota on March 25. All-Star Rashard Lewis adding 28 points in his third game back from the injured list. "It's like night and day (having Lewis on the floor)," Allen said. "I don't have to press at all with him. I just take the ball in, throw it to the open wing and sit back and watch." A jumper by Allen gave the Sonics a 91-70 lead with 10:29 remaining before the Wolves rallied with a 22-7 burst. Latrell Sprewell - one of the players who grumbled about his contract situation at the start of the season - scored seven of his 20 points during the spurt. However, Luke Ridnour made a layup and, following a pair of free throws by Kevin Garnett, Lewis had a dunk and jumper to build Seattle's lead to 105-94. "I'm trying to slow down a little bit and see the floor and make better two decisions," Ridnour said. "I was able to get into the lane and create some offense, and that's imortant." "In this league, you get what you deserve," McHale said. "We played like (garbage) defensively and we got our (butts) kicked." Garnett, the 2004 NBA MVP, scored just 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting. "We all as individuals have to look at ourselves in the mirror and say, 'What did I not do right?'" Garnett said. "You always have to ask yourself, 'What did I do or what could I have done to make this a better season?' and I'm not different from anybody else."
