Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- In a matchup of one of the best and the worst, it was not hard to tell who was who. Darko Milicic enjoyed the best game of his young career and the Detroit Pistons extended their winning streak to 11 games with an 95-68 rout of the lowly Atlanta Hawks. The battle between the defending champions and the team with the league's worst record was over early as the Pistons raced out to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter. "We tried to jump out early," Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince said. "The last couple of games Atlanta had been playing well. We tried to get off to a quick start." Atlanta (13-68), which set a season high for points in a 139-135 victory at New York on Sunday, equaled its season low in this one. "We just didn't have it tonight," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "After playing the game we did in New York, it was like we were satisfied and we showed it tonight." Milicic, the second pick in last year's draft who sees very little playing time, was given his first NBA start from coach Larry Brown. He responded by setting career highs by scoring 16 points and playing 30 minutes. The 19-year-old added five rebounds. "I wasn't really nervous out there," Milicic said. "I just needed to get going. I just came in ready to play and I play hard every time. I made the first couple of shots and gained confidence from there." "I was happy to see him," said Woodson, who was an assistant coach for Detroit last season. "He was impressive. Nobody had seen him play positive minutes. I thought he played pretty (darn good)." Prince scored 20 points to lead Detroit (54-27), which is locked into to the second seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With their lead, the Pistons elected to rest Richard Hamilton (eye) and Rasheed Wallace (hamstring). Prince, Ben Wallace and Chauncey Billups tallied 26, 24, and 19 minutes, respectively. Ben Wallace scored 15 points and collected 17 rebounds in his limited action. "Ben was phenomenal in the short time he was in there," Brown said. "Tayshaun (was) as well." The Hawks used a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to 33-27 with 5:13 remaining in the second period. But the Pistons responded with a 12-5 surge close the half, then used a 15-3 burst at the start of the third quarter. "We just weren't ready to play today," Atlanta rookie forward Josh Smith said. "Detroit plays hard and we weren't ready, so they blew us out early." With the loss, the Hawks ensured themselves of the dubious distinction of failing to post back-to-back wins this season. "It's not that we didn't try (to win two in a row)," Hawks center Jason Collier said. "It's the kind of inconsistency that we carry over from game to game. That's attributable to that we're young and we're learning." Smith scored 18 points for Atlanta, which has lost six games this season by at least 24 points.
