Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are rolling toward the playoffs. The Seattle SuperSonics are stumbling as the postseason approaches. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points and the Mavericks extended their winning streak to eight games with a 101-96 victory over the SuperSonics, who continued to struggle. Locked into the fourth seed in the Western Conference and a first-round playoff matchup against intrastate rival Houston, Dallas (57-24) improved to 15-2 since Avery Johnson replaced Don Nelson as coach. "Tonight we pretty much accomplished what we wanted," Johnson said. "We got everybody some playing time. I thought the guys had a terrific first half defensively." "In the past, sometimes we started out hot and fizzled toward the end or started out terrible, got hot in the middle and fizzled at the end," Mavericks guard Michael Finley said. "This year, for the first time in a long time, we ended on a positive note, and that's good a mind-set to have going into the playoffs." In their latest victory, the Mavericks squandered a 19-point halftime lead in the third quarter before recovering. Nowitzki led the way for the Mavericks, making 9-of-13 shots from the floor. Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen each scored 21 points for the Sonics (52-29), who already have clinched the Northwest Division and the third seed, where they will face Sacramento in the first round. But Seattle has lost seven of its last nine games. Sonics coach Nate McMillan, who was not planning on playing his starters extended minutes, was disappointed in his team's effort in the first half, when they trailed by as many as 21 points. "For some reason they misunderstood what I meant about playing tonight," McMillan said. "I didn't say this was a night off, I said we were going to try and cut guys' minutes." "I did go into the situation thinking I wasn't going to play as much as I played," Allen said. "I was only going to play the first quarter. Then (Dallas) went up by 20 or 30 and he wasn't happy with who was out there on the floor. He looked down the bench and put me back in the game." Lewis, who was playing his fourth game since returning from a foot injury, acknowledged he will not play in Wednesday's regular-season finale at Houston. "I won't play tomorrow night," Lewis said. "Ain't no way possible. I need to rest now because in the playoffs, I'm going to be playing 40 to 48 minutes." Allen had the same thoughts. "I'm not sure on whether I'm going to play tomorrow night," Allen said. "I strongly recommend that for myself, just so when Thursday or Friday comes at least I'll have had a day of rest and I can focus on getting my body taken care of." Lewis, Allen and Luke Ridnour combined for all the points in a 26-6 run in the third quarter, giving Seattle a 64-63 lead with 2:53 left in the period. But Shawn Bradley, who had 12 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes, scored 25 seconds later to give Dallas back the lead for good.
