Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson received a well-deserved rest. It might be the last one he has for a while. Iverson scored 16 points in the first quarter before sitting down as the Philadelphia 76ers headed into the postseason on a positive note with an easy 110-86 victory over the league-worst Atlanta Hawks. The NBA leader in minutes per game, Iverson sat for the entire second quarter and remained in the locker room in the second half, watching his younger teammates nurse a 67-38 halftime lead. Assured of his fourth scoring title, he played a season-low 12 minutes as his streak of 20-point games ended at 57. Iverson left the building before reporters entered the locker room. "When I took him out of the game it (the outcome) was not secured," Sixers coach Jim O'Brien said. "But at halftime, we were in a good postion, so I told him that I couldn't play him (in the second half) and he said 'That's great.' "It was very nice to give him that blow and a well-deserved one. He's had a phenomenal year for us and if you can reward him with three quarters off, that's all we're going to reward him, frankly." At the outset, the quicksilver Iverson set the pace as the Sixers scored 13 points on the fast break and raced to a 37-19 lead after one quarter. The Hawks tried to run with the Sixers but could not, committing 16 turnovers in the first half. Led by Iverson, Philadelphia (43-39) won eight of its last 10 games and will face defending NBA champion Detroit in the first round of the playoffs. The Sixers were nudged to seventh place in the Eastern Conference when Indiana beat Chicago. "It a real credit to our guys that we won eight of the last 10," O'Brien said. "We had never won eight of ten all year and for that matter, I don't think that we've been above .500 by four games. To be able to finish strong like that, I'm proud of our basketball team for doing that." "We're 3-1 against Boston and we're 1-3 against Detroit, so we wanted to play Boston obviously," Sixers forward Kyle Korver said. "At the same time, we're not scared of Detroit. We're going to play hard regardless of who it is. We have guys who have been in a bunch of playoff games and guys that haven't been in any, so, the younger guys are going to ask the veterans some questions to get a feel for it. Hopefully, we'll all be ready." If the Sixers have any chance of advancing, it will require a heavy dose of "The Answer." "He's had a great year," Korver said. "If we had more wins, I think that there's no question that he would be up there for MVP. He's playing the best basketball of the season right now and we're going to need him if we're going to continue to win." "Detroit always presents problems for us with their perimeter players," O'Brien said. "The confidence of a defending NBA champion I think is a real edge. The depth is there. Their defense is one of the best in the league and they are on a big-time winning streak." Korver scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures for the Sixers, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76) from the field and scored 33 fast-break points. Philadelphia never trailed and led by as many as 30 points. "We had to have it and we came up strong," Korver said. "We had a lot of energy and we got them down early. It was just a good win for us." Tyronn Lue scored 20 points and rookie Josh Smith added 18 and 13 rebounds for the Hawks (13-69), who missed the playoffs for the sixth straight year as they endured the worst season in franchise history. Atlanta barely avoided becoming the fifth 70-loss team in NBA annals and will have a 25 percent chance of receiving the top pick in the draft.
